Campbell wins men's bantamweight gold

Britain's Luke Campbell won the men's Olympic bantamweight (56kg) gold on Saturday with a 14-11 win over Ireland's John Joe Nevin to claim Britain's second boxing title of the London Games.

Having lost in the semi-finals, Cuba's Lazaro Alvarez and Japan's Satoshi Shimizu won bronze medals.

After Nicola Adams won the women's flyweight final on Thursday, this was Great Britain's second boxing gold of the Games.

"It's a dream come true," said the 24-year-old Campbell from Hull, England.

"My plan was simple: stay calm, stick to my boxing, keep things straight down the middle, no wild swings, and bring it home."

The last time the pair fought, Campbell came away with a count-back win from their 2011 world championships semi-final in Baku, Azerbaijan, after it finished 12-all and this was another tense affair.

Campbell made a postive start, landing some solid shots, to take a 5-3 lead in the first, but Nevin improved to take the second round 5-4, to give Campbell just a single point lead going into the third.

The world silver medallist knocked Nevin to the canvas midway with a right hook and although the Irishman was quickly back on his feet and worked hard until the final bell, Campbell took the round 5-3 to win gold.
