In royal photo scandal, some see Murdoch message

LONDON (AP) ? By letting his top-selling U.K. tabloid run photos of a naked Prince Harry cavorting in a Las Vegas hotel room, some say media mogul Rupert Murdoch was warning Britain's establishment that he could still shake things up.

British officialdom has largely turned its back on Murdoch because of the phone-hacking scandal that has badly tainted his media empire over the past year. So even though Murdoch's The Sun newspaper framed its decision to publish the nude pictures as a defense of press freedom, some observers saw the move as a feisty message from the tycoon.

"Not only was The Sun showing Harry's bottom, Murdoch was mooning the Establishment," said journalist Jane Merrick, whose article in The Independent on Sunday alleged that Murdoch personally ordered the paper to run the photos in a phone call with Tom Mockridge, the chief of his British newspaper unit, News International.

Murdoch, once assiduously courted by lawmakers across the British political spectrum, has seen his clout wither after his company was exposed as having hacked into the phones of hundreds of people to score scoops.

Allegations of bribery, corruption, computer hacking, and obstruction of justice are being investigated, and the scandal has prompted a judge-led media ethics inquiry that could propose sweeping changes to how Britain's press is policed ? potentially subjecting newspapers to government regulation.

If The Sun was cowed, it didn't show it Friday, when it published the pictures of Harry along with a lengthy public interest justification claiming that the "the photos have potential implications for the Prince's image representing Britain around the world."

A picture of the unclad royal ? clutching an unidentified woman ? had already been bouncing back and forth across the Internet for the better part of two days. Newspapers around the world ran the pictures, but with the prominent exception of The Sun, British media largely held its fire.

News International has declined to comment on what role, if any, the 81-year-old Murdoch played in the decision to run the photos, but the mogul's Twitter posts suggested that, at the very least, he'd been following the issue closely.

In a message to a user who congratulated him on The Sun's challenge to the royal family, Murdoch said he "needed to demonstrate (that there is) no such thing as free press in UK."

"Internet makes mockery of these issues," he said, adding that Britain could use some First Amendment-style legislation.

But the mogul also extended an olive branch to the royals, telling his followers to give the prince "a break."

"He may be on the public payroll one way or another, but the public loves him," Murdoch wrote.

Bits of Boardgames: Collection Building: Introduction Games

First impressions set the tone for a relationship of any kind. ?First impressions in the board game realm are just as important as impressions with people. ?Monopoly, Risk, Life, Trivial Pursuit, and games in that ilk are the standard of boardgames to most people. ?The bar is yet relatively low, but many people have a comfort with these games, and that has shaped what games should be in their mind.

Because of these preconceived notions, I feel like every gamer needs to have a game that they can pull out to show people what a designer board game is. ?Now, I run the risk of sounding really snobby here, so I'm doing my best to dance around that. ?Ultimately, we play games to have fun. ?If people have a good time playing Scrabble or Clue or Monopoly, that's great. ?I've done my best to never discourage people playing games, no matter what the game.

The goal of introductory games is to show people that there is a whole world of possibilities in games that they may not know about, and those games are something they might enjoy. ?As always, I'll provide a few examples, give my thoughts on them, and hopefully help you reach an idea of what you'd like to have in your collection.

Settlers of Catan?(3-4 players in the base, 5-6 with expansion)
This was the game that started it all for me. ?It was my first exposure to a game where everyone played the whole time, and had things to do even when it wasn't their turn. ?If you're not familiar with Settlers, you are trying to build settlements and cities with resources that you get on dice rolls. ?You'll rarely have everything you need, so you have to trade with other players. ?The dice are a comforting part of the game to players. ?The idea of trading is familiar, but the frequency is new to people. ?A lot of people can really get in to Catan and have fun the first time. ?Catan appeals best to the dice fans, and people who like Monopoly.

Carcassonne?(2-5 players, 6 with Inns and Cathedrals expansion)

Carcassonne was my 3rd game, and my first exposure to meeples. ?Just for the meeples themselves, the game is worth a look. ?Carcassonne is a fairly basic game to teach players. ?Drawing a tile, playing it to the board, and adding one of your tokens to the tile is fairly simple. ?There are some choices, and a lot of unique arrangements you can make with the tiles. ?Building a map is a fun thing for people of all ages to see, especially when it comes together. Can Carcassonne get a bit aggressive? ?Sure, but that's true of most games. ?Carcassonne is a great introduction to people who enjoy puzzles, and long term strategy.

Dominion?(2-4 players, up to 6 with Intrigue)
I first played Dominion in 2009, and I was instantly hooked. ?I bought it for my birthday, and it started a bit of an obsession. ?I've always been a fan of card games, I dabbled in Star Trek CCG and Pokemon, so I liked seeing cards interact. ?The idea of deckbuilding always intrigued me, but as a kid, I never had the money to have the best cards or a lot of the good cards, so I knew I'd never be great. ?Dominion changes that idea. ?It's deckbuilding, but the whole game is building your deck. ?Everyone starts with the same deck of 10 cards - 3 victory points, and 7 money. ?You have to use these cards to buy better cards, slowly making your deck bigger and better. ?The base game comes with 25 unique kingdom cards, and you play with 10 in each game. ?This gives a lot of variety and makes most games feel different than the last one you played. ?If someone is a fan of a CCG like Magic the Gathering, or Yu-Gi-Oh! this is something for them to look into. ?They might just appreciate not having to spend $100+ every few months to get new cards.

Ticket to Ride (2-5 players)
Ticket to Ride is the first game I ever bought for myself. ?I played the German board (Marklin version) with my gaming family. ?That's the most complicated version of TtR, but I liked the core. ?I decided to get the US map, since it would involve the least amount of hunting for odd cities, and thus save time. ?I'm so glad I bought TtR. ?It's currently my 3rd most played game (if you count all the different maps, 4th if you don't) and I don't see that changing. ?It's a game I can play with just about anyone. ?On a player's turn they have 3 options, really only 2 that come up every time. ?You either take cards or play cards. ?The third option is taking more destination tickets, but that isn't something to do every turn. ?The scoring is fantastically simple, you get points for trains on the board, you gain points for completed tickets, you lose points for tickets you don't complete. ? ?It's hard to nail down a particular group of people that would be best suited for the game. ?I don't want to cop-out and say everyone, so instead I think that Ticket is a great way to get people who used to play games as a kid, but lost interest due to a plethora of things, back into gaming.

Price Wars
No, not a game, just time to talk money. Remember these are Amazon prices. ?Better prices can be found if you hunt around a bit.
Catan ~ $34 for the base, $47 for the base+expansion
Carcassonne ~ $22
Dominion ~ $31
Ticket to Ride ~ $37

Like all these categories, this comes down to the budget pick, and the pick you want to have around.
Carcassonne takes the budget pick, but if you're willing to go up a bit, get Dominion.
As for the game to have around, my winner is still Ticket to Ride. ?It works for the widest range of people, and trains are just fun. ?If you want to take a 2nd in any category, I'd encourage you to take it here and also get Dominion.

These 4 games are fairly common these days. ?I think Target even carries at least Ticket and Catan, maybe more, haven't checked lately. ?Since they are common, you can generally find someone who owns a copy of at least one of these and ask to try it out. ?I like all 4 of these games, you can't go wrong with any of them.

Pakistan imam accuses Christian girl of 'conspiracy'

A Pakistani cleric who handed over a young Christian girl to police on blasphemy charges after she burned papers containing Koranic verses said Friday what she did was a "conspiracy" to insult Muslims.

Hafiz Mohammed Khalid Chishti, the imam of the mosque in the poor Islamabad suburb of Mehrabad, insisted he had saved the girl, Rimsha, from mob violence by handing her to police but said the incident arose because Muslims had not stopped local Christians' "anti-Islam activities" earlier.

Rimsha was arrested and remanded in custody for a fortnight last Thursday after being accused of burning pages from a children's religious instruction book, which were inscribed with verses from the Muslim holy text.

The youngster reportedly suffers from Down's Syndrome and her treatment has prompted outrage from rights groups and concern from Western governments, but Chishti insisted she was fully aware of what she was doing.

"The girl who burnt the Koran has no mental illness and is a normal girl," Chishti told AFP.

"She did it knowingly, this is a conspiracy and not a mistake. She confessed what she did."

Under the Islamic republic's strict blasphemy laws, insulting the prophet Mohammed is punishable by death and burning a sacred text by life imprisonment, though rights groups say the legislation is often abused to settle personal vendettas.

Chishti claimed the local Christian community had previously caused antagonism by playing music in services at their makeshift church during Muslim prayer time and said burning the pages was deliberate.

"They committed this crime to insult us further. This happened because we did not stop their anti-Islam activities before," he said.

"Last Christmas, they played musical instruments and there was vulgarity in the streets during our prayers time. I warned them but they did not stop."

During his sermon at Friday prayers Chishti told worshippers it was "time for Muslims to wake up" and protect the Koran.

Around 97 percent of Pakistan's 180 million population are Muslim and the country's tiny Christian minority has long suffered discrimination and poverty.

Mehrabad is home to around 500 Christian families but many fled after the page-burning, fearing a repeat of a 2009 incident in Gojra, in Punjab province, in which young Muslim radicals burned Christian houses, killing seven, after a rumour that a page from the Koran had been desecrated during a wedding.

Chishti said that on the day of the incident he went to Rimsha's home after people showed him the papers she had burned, and he found an angry crowd outside and three or four Muslim women attacking her.

"Some women were beating her and other people were trying to break her arms when I rescued her," he said.

Chishti said the girl confessed to burning the pages and insisted he had averted major violence by handing her over to police.

"People were demanding to burn their house, but I went to police and called them to avoid a major incident," he said.

"I had the Gojra incident in my mind, when Muslims burnt the whole Christians' colony. I did not want to repeat that."

Police have registered a case against more than 150 people for damaging property during the protest after the incident but Chishti insisted nobody from the area was involved.

"I did not invite people to protest against the Christians. The people who protested against the incident were from some other area," he said.

"The cleric who announced on loud speaker was also from another mosque and he did it outside this village. We have no link to that."

Rimsha had been due to appear in court to answer charges on Saturday, but investigating police officer Zabihullah and Rimsha's lawyer Tahir Naveed Chaudhry said the hearing was now expected on August 31.

Ivory Coast ex-president's spokesman arrested

The spokesman for Ivory Coast former president Laurent Gbagbo has been arrested in Ghana where he fled after the collapse of Gbagbo's regime, his family and a government source said Saturday.

Justin Kone Katinan was arrested under an August 2011 warrant for alleged economic crimes as budget minister during the three months of crisis and conflict that followed Gbagbo's refusal to cede power to his rival Alassane Ouattara in December 2010.

"He was arrested yesterday in Accra by Ghanaian police when he arrived from Johannesburg," a relative told AFP in Abidjan by telephone from Ghana's capital.

"This time it's right," said a source in Ouattara's government, referring to an earlier report of Katinan's arrest that turned out to be unfounded.

The source said that Ivorian officials had been sent to Accra and "he should be back in Abidjan within the day."

However a senior Ghanaian police officer denied knowledge of the arrest and the relative said Katinan would resist extradition as his status as a political refugee had just been renewed.

Gbagbo appointed Katinan his spokesman following his own arrest in April last year and subsequent extradition to stand trial at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

Katinan is the second of Gbagbo's henchmen to be arrested under an international warrant issued by the Ivorian government, after former defence minister Moise Lida Kouassi, who was picked up in Togo on June 6 and extradited the same day.

Katinan is accused of being behind a series of bank robberies to keep Gbagbo's camp in funds.

Thousands of Gbagbo loyalists fled to Ghana after the fall of his regime following the post-election conflict in which some 3,000 people were killed.

Tension is still high in Ivory Coast in the wake of attacks on the army that the Ouattara government has blamed on Gbagbo supporters.

Some 20 former regime figures have so far been detained and accused of genocide, crimes of violence and other charges.

Former minister Alphonse Douati was arrested in Abidjan on August 18, accused of violating state security.

Though some pro-Outtara forces have also been accused of crimes during the crisis, no one from the president's camp has so far been charged, leading to claims of bias and "victor's justice".

Joan Rivers makes laughs for voodoo priestess

Victor Decolongon / Getty Images Contributor

By Kathy Finn , Reuters

It was one of those couldn't-happen-anywhere-else moments in New Orleans that sometimes leaves outsiders scratching their heads.?

There was comedian Joan Rivers, veteran of cosmetic surgeries and snarky red carpet commentary, plying her trade on a little-known stage, cracking wise and raising money for a community center run by a voodoo priestess.

New Orleans has long been known for its eccentricities -- Bourbon Street, black magic and all that jazz -- and visitors might have seen Rivers' show as just another example of the city's offbeat vibe.

But for survivors of Hurricane Katrina, raising funds to benefit New Orleans' Healing Center was a cause to care about.?

For Rivers, the shows were a chance to help a friend, voodoo priestess Sallie Anne Glassman, who once exorcised a "demon" from Rivers' Manhattan apartment -- and that's no joke.?

Glassman, who last year married one of the city's most prominent real estate developers, co-founded a retail and community meeting space she dubbed the Healing Center to help invigorate the Bywater neighborhood.?

"She is enlightened beyond the spiritual and touched with a magic that most of us are not," Rivers told Reuters ahead of her New Orleans appearance earlier this week.?

The two first met 20 years ago, when Rivers called on Glassman to help rid her Manhattan apartment of a bothersome ghost. Rivers had not yet moved into the apartment when she noticed alarming signs that the place might be haunted.?

As Glassman tells it, parapsychologists had examined the building using "demon meters," and "the meters went through the roof." One examiner suggested Rivers seek Glassman's help.?

Glassman flew to New York, met the comedian and went to work. "I used a form of ceremonial magic that, without getting too technical, involves a banishing sword and a lot of screaming at the top of your lungs," Glassman said.?

Her actions tamed the ghost and led to a long friendship that brought Rivers to New Orleans for Glassman's marriage last October to developer Pres Kabacoff. The reception was held in the new Healing Center, which Glassman and Kabacoff developed.?

Colorful Center Helps Healing?

When Rivers stepped inside the colorful building, which includes a 250-seat performance area, it dawned on her that she could help them raise money for its operation. "I told them I wanted to do a benefit show as a wedding gift," she said.?

The three-story Healing Center is becoming a hub of activity in Bywater, a neighborhood hard hit by the Katrina flood. Glassman said the building's vivid turquoise and coral exterior has become a beacon along St. Claude Avenue and prompted neighbors to brighten homes and businesses as well.?

Inside the building are a fitness center, yoga studio, Mediterranean restaurant, book store and art gallery, among other small businesses that have taken up residency.?

The building also houses Glassman's shop, called the Island of Salvation Botanica, the walls and shelves of which are lined with talismans, voodoo dolls, candles, chicken-foot fetishes and bottles of mysterious liquids with such labels as "Dragon's Blood Uncrossing Bubble Bath."?

After Glassman rid her apartment of its ghost, Rivers embraced it all.?

On the Healing Center's stage this week, resplendent in a silver-sequined shrug draped over black pants and silver-heeled stilettos, Rivers regaled a packed house with two shows of biting, raunchy jabs at stars from Nicole Kidman to Betty White.?

She paid tribute to Glassman and Kabacoff for their efforts on behalf of New Orleans, then in characteristically irreverent fashion went on to make light of the 2005 Katrina disaster.?

"Sean Penn called me right after the storm and said I should come down here because there would be lots of paparazzi and I'd get my picture in the paper, so I did, and it was great -- we had our own boat," Rivers joked.?

"Some of you might have been in the water trying to get in our boat while I was stomping on your hands," she added, pounding her heel on the floor and spurring fits of laughter.?

After the shows, the 78-year-old Rivers returned to New York to prepare for a month-long tour of England and Ireland.?

Glassman began planning her next big event, the annual Anba Dlo Halloween festival -- described as an extravaganza of spiritual activities with an "invocation of the mermaid spirit of deep waters," psychic readings, live musical performances and a parade of Radical Faeries.

Only in New Orleans.?

Microsoft revamps logo for 1st time in 25 years

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft's corporate logo has a new look, setting the stage for a wave of products designed to cast the world's largest software maker in a new light.

The makeover unveiled Thursday marks the first time that Microsoft Corp. has revamped its logo since February 1987. The Internet was barely around then, and cellphones were considered a luxury.

At the time, Microsoft was putting the finishing touches on the second version of its Windows operating system. Two of Microsoft's biggest nemeses ? Google Inc. co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin ? were just 13 years old. And Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs was just in the second year of an 11-year exile from the company that went on to invent the iPod, iPhone and iPad after he returned.

By revamping its logo, Microsoft is trying to signal that it has changed its thinking and its products to cater to people who are interacting with technology much differently than just a decade ago, let alone a quarter century.

Now, more computing tasks are being done on touch-based devices such as smartphones and tablets instead of personal computers tethered to keyboards and mice. Many software applications are now supplied over high-speed Internet connections for a monthly fee instead of being installed on individual computers.

Microsoft believes a radical change to Windows will ensure that the company survives the technological upheaval. Windows 8, due to hit the market Oct. 26, displays software applications in a mosaic of tiles and has been engineered so it works on both touch-based tablets and traditional PCs. The company also is releasing its own Windows 8-powered tablet to compete against the iPad, accompanied by a new version of Office applications tailored for such devices. There also will be a Windows 8 operating system for smartphones.

The new logo ushers in "one of the most significant waves of product launches in Microsoft's history," Jeff Hansen, the company's general manager of brand strategy, wrote in a blog post Thursday.

The redesign features the Microsoft name in a lighter, straight font called Segoe to replace the italic bold type used in the old standby. The new logo also includes the familiar red, blue, yellow and green colors used in the flag on Microsoft's Windows operating system, but the colors will be in a square box instead of the curvy template that has been in place for years. Those color boxes evoke the tiles that will be central to Windows 8.

"The ways people experience our products are our most important 'brand impressions,'" Hansen wrote. "That's why the new Microsoft logo takes its inspiration from our product design principles while drawing upon the heritage of our brand values, fonts and colors."

The new logo made its debut Thursday on Microsoft's websites, as well as three of its stores in Boston, Bellevue, Wash. and Seattle, which is located near the company's Redmond, Wash., headquarters.

This is Microsoft's fifth logo since Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded the company 37 years ago. When it last changed its logo in 1987, Microsoft had been a publicly traded company for less than a year and boasted a market value of about $2 billion. It peaked at more than $600 million in 1999. Now, Microsoft's market value stands at $254 billion ? less than half of Apple's market value of $623 billion.

Rats fed carcinogen get cancer: So what?

There is little more disheartening than scientists who pursue unscientific ideological agendas when public health is at risk. Yet that?s what happened at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society this week, where a group of scientists reported finding the first ?strong oral carcinogen? in smokeless tobacco such as chewing tobacco, snuff, and other products.

Dr. Stephen Hecht, a researcher in carcinogenesis and chemoprevention at the University of Minnesota, led the study that identified NNN (one of a class of compounds called nitrosamines that are found in tobacco) as the carcinogen in question. Dr. Hecht and colleagues arrived at this conclusion after they fed two forms of NNN to laboratory rats for 17 months and found that the rats developed oral and esophageal tumors.

Since NNN is found in smokeless tobacco ? along with a myriad of other substances ? Dr. Hecht felt the need to impugn these non-combustible products by implying that they are indeed ? thanks to his new research ? somehow as toxic as cigarettes. He believes that the results are especially important because of the growing use of smokeless tobacco, especially ?among younger people who think it is a safer form of tobacco than cigarettes.?

But not only are the results of the study far from novel, they also have nothing to do with the safety of smokeless tobacco products in humans. Perhaps conveniently, Dr. Hecht neglects to acknowledge the human epidemiology from the Swedish experience of the past fifty-plus years. Public health data from that country shows that users of modern smokeless tobacco products (widely known as snus) are not at an increased risk of oral or throat cancer, compared to non-users of tobacco.

?Dr. Hecht knows full well that smokeless tobacco is a safer form of tobacco use than cigarettes,? says ACSH's Dr. Gilbert Ross. ?Making statements that indicate otherwise only suggests his ideological agenda: to disparage harm reduction. Yet tobacco harm reduction is actually a progressive approach to helping smokers quit. It relies on reduced risk tobacco products and cleaner nicotine delivery systems to help the 45 million addicted smokers in our country quit their lethal habit.??

You can read more about tobacco harm reduction in ACSH'S publication here.

New NASA video captures drama of Mars landing

This 360-degree panorama provided by NASA Wednesday Aug. 22, 2012 shows evidence of a successful first test drive for NASA's Curiosity rover. The rover made its first move, Wednesday, going forward about 15 feet (4.5 meters), rotating 120 degrees and then reversing about 8 feet (2.5 meters). (AP) ? Viewers can now relive the drama of the Curiosity rover's landing on Mars with a new NASA video detailing the final moments of touchdown.

The space agency Thursday posted the video on its website embedded with audio from mission control. It starts with the heat shield falling away. The ground grows larger in view as Curiosity is lowered by cables inside an ancient Martian crater. "Touchdown confirmed" is heard followed by cheers.

Curiosity is the first spacecraft to record a landing on another planet. The six-wheel rover arrived on Aug. 5 to begin a two-year mission to examine whether the Martian environment was hospitable for microbial life.

NASA previously released a low-quality video of Curiosity's landing. The latest video is higher quality, but it's incomplete and missing several frames.

The common fallacies in IT outsourcing and the Picasso effect ...

This is a contribution from a reader. Bala Narayanaswamy is an experienced technology and management consultant based in London. He has over 16 years in the IT industry and holds an MBA from business school as well as an MS in Software Engineering.

The article describes the common fallacies in IT outsourcing as believed by decision makers across industries.

The common fallacies in IT outsourcing

By Bala Narayanaswamy

"Let us start with a typical scenario that gets played across boardrooms all over the world. The CEO of a leading global company is troubled by many things - tanking share price, reduced margins, high cost base etc. He has called in his army of managers and consultants to figure out a solution. Soon, they spot one of the problems i.e. the company's IT spend. On average, the company seems to be spending a good deal more on IT than its main competitor. On subsequent analysis, the CEO understands that the competitor has outsourced most of its IT and is thus able to use freed up capital for developing the core business. Voila! The solution presents itself - the CEO immediately orders a comprehensive review of IT portfolio with a view to outsourcing as much IT as possible.

Let me pause here for a show of hands! How many of you actually think the decision was a no-brainer and the CEO made the right call? If you raised your hand, be assured, you are part of the majority. After all, the rationale is straightforward - since IT jobs are not core business jobs, they are the right candidates for outsourcing. In addition, this will enable the Company to benefit from the scale economies of the provider with minimal impact to IT delivery quality, or so the thinking goes.

It is true that IT outsourcing, when done the right way, can provide the aforementioned benefits, but it is also true that in most cases, these promised synergies and benefits do not materialise. While it is easy to come up with a ready-made list of causes (some people get paid a lot to say things such as "time difference between the Company and the Vendor"), the following two or three assumptions are the main culprits in the author's humble opinion.

The fallacy of perfect substitutes (a.k.a Picasso fallacy)

Guernica is Picasso's most famous and controversial painting. The story goes that in the 1950s, the man himself allowed three copies to be made so that they can be shown around the world because the original was too fragile to travel. While the current day stardom of Guernica is no doubt in part down to these substitutes, the artists who copied the painting don't command exulted status because they are what they are, imitators. In other words, it takes a Picasso to create a Picasso! Imitators can copy, but can never create an original masterpiece.

When companies outsource IT jobs, they often fall for this fallacy of perfect substitutes. During skill set reviews, the outsourcing Vendors regularly produce very-relevant-for-the-job resumes replete with glossy references. The decision makers then go through a very impersonal, paper based skillset comparison, often deciding that an employee with, say, 10 year experience in solution architecture can be easily substituted by a low cost vendor resource with similar experience. But these processes tend to ignore one important factor - that is, the company might actually be substituting a Picasso with an imitator.

Let me give a case in point. There is this established Fortune 500 Company with presence across the globe. Not too long ago, it decided to transfer the Payroll IT function to an established Vendor. During the immediate six months following the transition, the payroll date was missed twice due to IT system related problems. Prima facie, it did not seem like a big issue since the impact was less than ?50k and both issues got resolved under two days. But when you compare it with the record of the previous team, which never missed a payroll date for nearly 30 years, you get the complete story. That team seem to have had an X factor, which the company had failed to spot while deciding to transition the roles. ?

The Venetian arsenal fallacy

Let me take you to the story of world's first assembly line. We are not talking Ford Model T, but that of the Venetian Arsenal, a ship building machine that was key to protecting Venetian trading interests in the Mediterranean.? The story goes that, by the 15th and 16th century, the workers had gained so much experience and the process so well-tuned that the Arsenal was able to produce one ship a day, start to finish.

When a company does IT outsourcing today, one of the most common assumptions is that there will be little drop in the level of productivity short term and an increase in the long term. People will explain that the IT vendors have been in the business for a long time and bring a favourable experience curve. In addition, because this is the only thing the Vendors do, they should naturally be very good at it (an argument sometimes supported by Adam Smith's Division of Labour).

The problem here is the misalignment of productivity and incentives. If you agree with me that productivity means "doing more for less", then it also goes without saying that the IT Vendors are not incentivised to increase their productivity. After all, why should they? If the agreement was to do N number of things for P pounds, then it is not in vendor's interest to do N+ things for the same P. Most managers realise this only much later in the game when stacks of CRs begin to pile up quoting various changes to the scope of work.

One Team, One Culture fallacy

When a Company decides on an outsourcing partner, the "Cultural fit" question is usually ignored. This is because decision makers automatically assume that the vendor would adopt the company's culture and deliver within that framework. Whatever little attention is paid is usually focused on religious/political beliefs, body language etc. The vendor's attitude towards "Risk", a potentially deal breaking factor, does not get a look-in because no one sees the need.

Now compare this with a Mergers and Acquisitions scenario. The CxOs of the Company will pay top money to financial advisors to fully understand the culture of the Company being acquired or sold. While this is the right thing to do, a variant of this cultural due diligence is also essential to make IT outsourcing work.

A company can belong to any category across the risk taking spectrum but almost all vendors are clustered around the conservative side of the equation. Imagine that you are an investment bank with an aggressive, risk taking front office business with an outsourced IT support function. Since the vendor business model is based on risk aversion (think formal documentation, approvals etc.), no amount of education and encouragement will convince the vendor to match the go-getting attitude of the business. From the vendor point of view, this is fully justified since they don't participate in any upside but take the full brunt of down side. ?

Summary

Companies will be better off by questioning the common assumptions when deciding to outsource IT functions. It is easy to overlook the gap in all round skills needed to successfully do the job. In addition, expectations need to be clearly set out and understood on long term productivity improvement targets. Lastly, a thorough analysis of cultural fit should be made mandatory and results fed into decision making process."

Proven but Little Known Ways to Cure Arthritis Without Drugs ...

Proven but Little Known Ways to Cure Arthritis Without Drugs

Article by John Savage

No matter which type of arthritis you suffer from, be it osteoarthritis, gout, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis or any one of the myriad forms of this disease, you need a safe and effective arthritis treatment.

Attention is now turning towards natural arthritis medication for pain relief that is safe and viable for long term use.

There has been quite a scare recently due to the recall of Vioxx a Cox-2 inhibitor from the NSAIDS family of drugs. Vioxx was a major drug for arthritis pain relief. Sufferers are worried and wondering which drugs are safe and which one may be next to be withdrawn from the market.

All drugs have side effects, there?s no disputing that. The question is how dangerous are these side effects and are they worse than the disease they are supposed to help? In the case of Vioxx, the side effects were increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Deadly stuff!

Unfortunately some side effects will only show up in time. No matter how well a drug is researched and tested, the question ?How many other time bombs are lurking out there?? is valid and is currently being investigated.

So where does this leave the unfortunate person seeking arthritis pain relief? Well the best thing is not to get caught up in all the hype in the press. Keep in touch with your arthritis doctor or rheumatologist to get the up to date news on what?s available and what?s ?safe? to take at the moment.

Natural arthritis medication is a viable and safe option that can be taken with confidence while waiting for the dust to settle on the NSAIDS debate. Some people have experienced dramatic relief from taking these natural remedies and have decided that a natural remedy for arthritis is the answer to relieving arthritis pain while being free of the worry over dangerous side effects.

Acupuncture for Arthritis

Acupuncture is another natural remedy for arthritis. Acupuncture involves the use of needles to stimulate energy centres in the body for effective pain relief.

Massage can benefit most types of arthritis, especially fibromyalgia, as it relaxes the muscles. Likewise the application of heat can have a relaxing and pain relieving effect.

Arthritis and Exercise

Exercise is great for arthritis as well. Gentle exercises such as yoga, pilates, swimming and walking are suitable. Stretch well before exercising and in the case of an attack of gout, wait until the pain and inflammation has subsided before starting.

So there is natural arthritis relief out there for those wanting to get away from drugs and their side effects or for those wanting more information on arthritis to expand their treatment options.

Those natural arthritis treatments are safe, effective and put you in control of the disease. Always remember though to always seek professional medical advice at all times.

Comforting and Awakening Massage: Hong ... - NC BEA Health Blog

Hong Kong may have several commercially successful companies and world-known attractions, but for the keen and adventurous traveler, lesser known pleasures, such as street food or massage Hong Kong style, are just as worth trying.

Along the streets in the cities and suburbs, massage parlors are flourishing. Massage Hong Kong style is well patronized by locals and especially by the tourists. From a selection of Thai, Shiatsu, Tantric and more, a tourist can be kept well-relaxed and stress-free for hours. If you?re asking for saunas, sensual massage, and a happy ending massage, Hong Kong won?t always admit it, but it has it all.
