Apple Stock Nearing Critical Short-Term Resistance | Stocks ...
After a huge December to April stock run up that saw every analyst and his brother/sister calling market tops the whole way up (myself included), Apple (AAPL) finally decided to take a breather? but not before every mom and pop retail investor had at least thought about buying, with many getting loud about it in April.
You see, it?s only natural to want in on high-flying, euphoric action. Quite simply, no one wants to be left out. Don?t get me wrong, Apple is a wonderful company; I just don?t like chasing and prefer to get in at ?discount? prices at technical levels I like. In short, Apple stock fell from a high of 644 in April to a low of 522 in May. This much-needed pullback allowed the stock to breathe a bit and for investors to reassess. Back in May I posted two charts on Apple?s near-term pullback objective, looking at the .382 Fibonacci retracement?level of 537, and the A-B-C measured move target of 529. Apple?s intraday low was 522.18 and closing low 530.38 ? not too shabby.

From there, the stock rallied back near 620 before selling off after earnings. So that leaves a few important questions: Was the recent rally just a retest of the highs? If so, where could it fall to next? Or is the recent move higher a sign of new highs to come?
?
For help answering these questions, we?ll need to look at the technical charts and consider a few important near term technical levels:
?
1. ?The broken near-term trend line. Apple broke below its near-term uptrend line after its recent earnings miss. It is now (today) technically backtesting this line (currently around 600 and ascending). A break above would be a bullish sign.
?
2. ?The larger picture downtrend line. When Apple couldn?t mount 620, it formed a pretty clear downtrend line and wedge formation. If the stock can clear the backtest (lower wedge line) and the larger picture downtrend line, then the bulls will be back in business.
?
3. ?570 Support. This is the 50% Fibonacci retracement level of the May to July up move. It is also the late June closing pivot higher and lateral support. In short, a?sustained break of the 570 support area would hint at lower prices. So, in summary, if?Apple fails to sustain a break above the larger picture downtrend line, then investors should watch 570, for a break of this level could usher in the possibility of a larger picture A-B-C move, making the initial A-B-C move a fractal.

Creams need to be applied daily to begin with, but once treatment is complete, they will only be needed on an occasional basis to maintain the effect (since creams alone will not remove the gland).
In extreme cases, where the anti-sebum creams alone don have enough of an effect, Fordyce spots treatment can be extended with a range of cosmetic procedures, including chemical peels and laser treatments ?similar to the rejuvenating processes used by many beauticians. Since such procedures always have slight risks associated with them, many doctors will discourage you from seeking them, as Fordyce spots are essentially totally harmless. Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports the move was ?deeply felt inside the team?s headquarters in Tempe,? and could hint at a split between General Manager Rod Graves and coach Ken Whisenhunt.
Somers said it would be ?hard to find a Cardinals employee more well-liked by his co-workers? than Casey, and there was no previous sense he was bad at his job.?But he was also close with Whisenhunt, as the two occasionally played golf together.
Was that the reason he was fired, as a power play by Graves?
?That?s ridiculous,? Graves told Somers, when asked about the speculation. ?Ken and I have a wonderful working relationship, and we?re on the same page in respect to improving as an organization, improving as a team and working together.?
Casey himself declined comment to Somers, and Graves didn?t elaborate on why he was replaced. There were other moves made in the front office as well, so perhaps it was part of a larger organizational shift.
Casey was replaced by Sean Castle, a CPA with no NFL experience.
?Our focus is on being a championship organization and becoming a championship team,? Graves said. ?Every year in that quest, I?m evaluating where we are, from a personnel standpoint, and assessing new talent out there.
?What I have been able to do in assessing candidates is really get a feel for the skill sets people have and realize what services they can provide us that we don?t have. And sometimes at the end of that evaluation, you come to the conclusion that you?re better off making changes.?
That?s all well and good, and there could easily be a reason for all this. But when moves like this are made without full explanation, the vacuum quickly fills with conspiracy theories. Whether there?s a Graves-Whisenhunt split or not, the impression does no good for the organization, and barring evidence to the contrary, folks will begin to believe it whether it?s true or not.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Charlie Sheen says he's not insane anymore.
Instead, these are good days for the "Anger Management" star, he declares, with his FX sitcom half-way through its initial 10-episode run and poised to get an order for 90 more.
Sheen told reporters Saturday that the prospect of continuing is as "exciting as hell," and added cheerily, "I don't think 90's gonna be enough."
With the expected pickup, FX plans to bring aboard Sheen's dad, Martin Sheen, as a recurring cast member. He will play the father of Charlie Goodson, the anger-management therapist played by Charlie Sheen. The veteran movie actor, who also played President Jed Bartlet on the drama series "The West Wing," is guest-starring on an "Anger Management" episode that airs Aug. 16.
"I think that was the best episode we did," his son said.
Adding Sheen's father to the series "will give an extra dimension and make it a multi-generational family show," FX boss John Landgraf said in making the announcement.
The production schedule would call for filming a total of 100 episodes in just two years. This kind of cost-saving routine means no time for rehearsals, said executive producer Bruce Helford.
"The actors get the lines, we see the scene, the writers make changes, the actors go to makeup, cameras are blocked, we come back together and shoot the scene," he explained.
At first, the cast members "felt like basically they were on the ledge. But by the third episode, everyone found the characters to the point that the writers were following their lead," Helford said.
"I feel like how we started, we just scratched the surface ? barely," said Sheen, who arrived for his appearance at the Television Critics Association session clad in Bermuda shorts, a long-sleeve shirt and loafers without socks.
He likened his tumultuous departure from "Two and a Half Men" and the stormy aftermath last year to a dream he couldn't wake up from. Or like "a train I couldn't get off of, except that I was the conductor," he added, speaking in quick bursts and fidgeting in his chair.
He said he learned a lot from that period, including "stick to what you know." Referring to his disastrous "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option" tour in spring 2011, he got laughs from the group when he advised, "Don't go on the road with a one-man show in 21 cities without an act. "
"I'm not insane anymore," he summed up.
What's different now from Sheen's angry stretch on "Men," characterized by his much-publicized clashes with series creator Chuck Lorre?
Helford weighed in with a theory. On "Men," he ventured, "Charlie didn't really have a voice with creative input. It wasn't built that way."
On "Anger Management," Helford said he's forged a partnership with his star.
"We built this together," he said. "And when Charlie's on the stage, that's his stage. When you feel that, your creative juices are flowing, everything is better for you, because you have a say in what you're doing.
"When you don't control your destiny, things get screwed up in your head," he said as Sheen nodded.
On "Anger Management," Charlie Goodson thrives on chaos. Sheen was asked if he does, too, or if he longs for a simpler life.
"I can wish every minute for a simple life. It's not gonna happen," Sheen replied. "But I don't really look at it as chaos. I look at it as challenges."

Ebola outbreak in Uganda kills 14
An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus that erupted in western Uganda at the start of July has killed 14 people, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Saturday.
The latest outbreak was in the western Kibaale district, around 200 kilometres (125 miles) west of the Ugandan capital Kampala, and around 50 kilometres from the border with Democratic Republic of Congo,
"We have confirmed 20 people who have contracted the virus of which 14 have died," Joaquim Sewaka, WHO Uganda representative, told AFP.
Sewaka said that teams from the Ugandan health ministry and the US government's Centre for Disease Control (CDC) had been dispatched to the area.
"The response is strong and we will try to set up quarantine points as soon as possible," Sewaka said.
The rare haemorrhagic disease, named after a small river in DR Congo, killed 37 people in western Uganda in 2007 and claimed the lives of at least 170 people in the north of the country in 2000.

Big enough, Gizmodo notes, to justify harnessing the power of computer packing a total of 1,872 processors to model the complex interactions between the various ingredients in your favorite pint of frozen flavored sugar milk to find the best combination.
The collaboration between?researchers at the University of Edinburgh's Soft Condensed Matter Physics group and the Edinburgh Parallel Computer Center harnesses supercomputers to "study, predict and ultimately improve the behavior of 'soft matter'." Ice cream happens to be the tastiest example.
The same technology has been used to model weather patterns and nuclear explosions, explains a promotional video from Nvidia, whose processors are packed in the Cray supercomputer.?
The ice cream modeling research is also applicable to engine oil, paints, ketchup, mayonnaise, even soaps and shampoos, according to Alan Gray at the University of Edinburgh.

Student Work: Delphi Inspires Creative Writing | Semester at Sea

Professor Elizabeth Denton?s introduction to fiction writing class visited the site of Apollo?s temple in Delphi, a place to which people from all across the ancient world traveled to hear the?prophecies of the Delphic Oracle, also known as the Pythia.
In preparation for their visit, Professor Peter Krentz provided some historical context for these young writers.
First they heard the legend of how Delphi became the center of the ancient world. Apollo?released two birds at opposite ends of the earth at the same time. They met at Delphi, proving that Delphi was the center of the world.
Then the students heard a bit about the Pythia, the priestess at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, located on the beautiful slopes of Mount Parnassus. Krentz?described how ancient texts have documented the Pythia inhaling a sweet-smelling gas before prophesying. He related how modern geology has helped demystify the Pythia. As it turns out,?the temple sits directly over the spot where two fault lines cross.?Not only that, but investigators found evidence of ethylene, a gas that has a sweet smell and in low doses can make one feel euphoric or in a somewhat altered state of consciousness, but still allows one to be able to sit up and speak.
After seeing the archeological ruins and hearing more stories about the Oracle students were asked to write a short piece of fiction inspired by what they saw and by the stories they heard.? The only requirement for the assignment was to set the piece in the modern world.

Losing Ground

She whispered to herself a story of two birds, released so they could fly to the center. When the center was reached, it was pierced with celestial light ? a white stake that froze in midair with a crack, ground spreading beneath it.
It fell haphazardly. Two pigeons tried to meet in the middle, one falling with a broken wing.
Strangers from near and far would come to the monument to marvel at the bleached stones that reached up up up. Trains grumbled below, screeching in the darkness. Planes flew overhead, shaking the sky into the color of dishwater. She saw the sun slip up, a kite with a broken string. She climbed to the top of the tower but the sun had disappeared.
?
Strangers from near and far would come to the reflecting pool to purify themselves. They stared into the water and remembered; they stared into the water and forgot. She saw the moon drowning in the pool, a precious necklace dropped into murky water. She waded into the water but the moon had disappeared.
It hung in midair, creaking with wind, suspended like a rusted iron swing.
She whispered to herself a story of a small rock. It spun around the sun. Drops of dew pulsed from it, pulled towards the light of the moon. If the sun and the moon met in the middle, knowledge would drip down onto the center of the rock.

A homeless woman sat by the edge of the water at night, a rainbow pigeon cradled between her wilted fingers. Waiting.

Maria stood at the very edge of the rock, looking out across the valley, a valley bathed in the golden light of a setting sun. The wind itself seemed to be made of sunlight as it whirled and danced with her long brown hair. She spun once and the length of it swirled around her neck, her waist, her legs, as if caught in a silent storm at the edge of the world. Her glowing amber gown billowed fiercely beneath her as she waltzed with the sun-warmed breeze. Arms held above her, the dress was brilliant and alive; it set her on fire. In her world, just like in her dream, Maria was a radiant sun, one to rival the star disappearing on the horizon.
?Maria, come back!?
????????????????? Maria whipped her head around at the sound and her hair followed. Flying straight from the forest behind her was a delicate, pure white hummingbird. The messenger stopped to hover just inches in front of Maria?s beautiful face and opened its small, pointed beak.
?Be careful, Maria,? it said in a familiar voice.
?Be careful!? screamed Annie, who stood in her white nurse?s uniform, pressed against the rope fence that separated the rugged dirt path from the edge of the cliff.? She reached small, pointed fingers toward Maria, a girl dressed in nothing but a yellow, translucent hospital gown and matching yellow bandana. She was hunched over, staring at the air in front of her, a wide smile stretching her gaunt features.
?Maria!? Annie screeched into the wind. ?Come back!?
But Maria saw only her bird. Raising her golden arms, she lifted the delicate crown that graced her head, a small, sunlit circlet that glistened with dozens of tiny, multicolored jewels. She laughed, a song of pure joy, as the hummingbird flew through the hoop in a burst of snowy feathers. He came out the other side brighter, cleaner, more beautiful. Such was her joy that her small white companion couldn?t help but laugh as well and her hair took to swirling around them both.
?Silly bird,? said Maria, throwing her tiara into the wind where it exploded in a cloud of shimmering gold powder. ?The Oracle doesn?t need to be careful, little bird. I can fly, like you. I dreamed it!?
?Maria, don?t!? Annie cried from her restricted position behind the rope. She watched the thin, dirty bandana float gently to the rocks below. ?Please, you?re not the Oracle. You can?t fly!?
?Annie didn?t dare cross the line, for fear of falling off herself.
Maria stood directly in front of Annie, laughing and twirling, the light shining through her thin, dirty hospital gown, revealing her emaciated figure. Every spin brought her closer and closer to the edge. Annie stood useless in her wrinkled white dress, three unswallowed pills clutched tightly in her hand.
?Please, just come back! Please!?
?I don?t need to come back,? Maria told the bird, smiling a most brilliant smile. ?I?m exactly where I should be. Here, with you, and with my sun. I dreamed it. I know!?
She raised her foot, slowly, as if stepping through water. She reached out a delicate hand and the hummingbird flew forward to land on her slender finger, a snowflake set on fire. She kissed its tiny head and threw it back into the air.
Annie watched horrified as Maria?s bare foot stood hovering over nothingness.
?Let us fly, my bird!? Maria called to the setting sun. ?I dreamed it!?
And she flew.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Lance Hyche, Birmingham representative for the?Alabama Education Association, said he's been in meetings today with lawyers who plan to fight many of the layoffs among the city school district's lowest-paid employees.
The Birmingham Board of Education rejected a financial plan Tuesday to demote or lay off nearly 200 employees, but Alabama state Superintendent Tommy Bice overruled the board's decision. The 118 employees who were terminated lost their jobs at the close of business Wednesday.
Hyche said he's heard from at least 50 members so far, and expects to hear from more, seeking advice and legal representation.
"With one exception, all of the employees terminated made $35,000 and under," Hyche said. "And the one exception made $55,000. That's the point we're trying to make -- this plan was sold originally as 'we're going to come in and chop?all the high paid administrators' and that's not what happened."
The plan cuts more than $12 million from the district's budget over the next two years, necessary to meet a state requirement that school systems keep a reserve fund equal to one month's worth of operating expenses. Birmingham has about $2 million of the $17 million required. It will also lose about $6 million in state funding because of declining enrollment.
Tuesday was the first meeting run by Bice since the state took over the Birmingham school system's finances last month.

Rep. West endorses fellow GOP freshman Adams
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Florida Republican Rep. Allen West endorsed Rep. Sandy Adams on Thursday, backing a fellow tea party freshman over 10-term Rep. John Mica in an intraparty GOP fight that voters will decide next month.
In a statement from the Adams campaign, West said he and Adams went to Washington two years ago "to work to get our republic back on track. We quickly learned the problems were deeper and there were some entrenched careerist politicians who supported the status quo."
West, the outspoken congressman who also represents a Florida district, said he backed Adams because she represents a "new generation of Republican conservatives who have come to the halls of Congress to find solutions and is working tirelessly against some on Capitol Hill who would rather perpetuate the problems."
West's endorsement comes less than a month before the Aug. 14 primary in Florida between Adams and Mica, the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Redistricting pitted Mica against Adams in the central Florida district near Orlando. The fierce fight represents a clash of establishment vs. tea party, federal spending to boost local economies vs. budget cutting to rein in the deficit.
Lawmakers have shown their preferences in the half-dozen Republican and Democratic intraparty battles through campaign contributions, but West's full-throated endorsement is a fresh reminder of tea party solidarity.
Most notably, earlier this year, several Republican leaders signaled their support for Rep. Adam Kinzinger over veteran Rep. Donald Manzullo in the Illinois incumbent vs. incumbent race by contributing to Kinzinger, who prevailed in the March primary.
Adams, a former deputy sheriff and state lawmaker, recently picked up the backing of 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Mica won the support of former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on Wednesday.

In accepting West's backing, Adams said the status quo is no longer acceptable.

The winner of the Florida primary is likely to prevail in November in the Republican-leaning district.

It remains an area of unmet need in terms of effective anti-cancer agents with innovative patient selection strategies.
