8 Ways to Protect Your Home Against Tornadoes and Hurricanes

This story initially appeared in June 2011. We're reposting in response to the devastating tornadoes that struck Moore, Okla., yesterday. These kinds of building techniques may not have saved all those caught in the path of the monster Moore tornado, but hundreds of twisters hit the United States every year, and smart building strategies and tech can reduce the damage from the great many of those.

This year has blown away the annual average for deadly tornadoes in the U.S. (28) with a barrage that numbers 50 and counting. This April was the worst tornado month on record, and storms throughout the year have ripped through Alabama, Massachusetts, Missouri and elsewhere. And now, as tornado season winds down, the late-summer hurricane season is about to begin.

Ernst Kiesling, professor of civil engineering at Texas Tech University, says there's not much you could do if a tornado scoring a 5 on the EF (enhanced Fujita) scale bears down on your home (and in the case of tornadoes, with their smaller path of destruction, many people would rather gamble with fate than invest in armoring their homes with costly technologies). But if you want to try to brace your home against the howling winds of twisters or hurricanes, there is a spectrum of technologies available, from roof clips and window shutters at the more inexpensive end to reinforcements for doors and walls at the high end. And if you do nothing to safeguard your home, Kiesling says, at the very least, protect your family with an in-home safe room or underground shelter.

Microsoft lands NFL partnerships for Xbox One and the football field (video)

Microsoft lands NFL partnership

Microsoft is clearly determined to sew up some of the best content for the Xbox One: it just revealed a special, multi-year partnership with the NFL. The two are working on an optimized experience that better integrates fantasy football, including score displays, onscreen updates and Skype. They also promise exclusive content, naturally, including a lock on translating many of these experiences to tablets. The partnership will extend to the real arenas, too -- among other technologies, Microsoft will bring Surface tablets to coaches and players to improve their communication and play calling. There aren't many more details so far, but it's evident that Microsoft wants to cater to football fans with a lot more than just its existing ESPN app.

Coalition to last despite rifts, infighting - Clegg

By Andrew Osborn

LONDON (Reuters) - Deputy prime minister will take the unusual step of holding a news conference on Wednesday to say the country's two-party coalition will hold together until 2015 as he tries to stabilise a government beset by infighting and rifts.

In a demarche that risks being cast as a sign of weakness by political opponents, Nick Clegg, the leader of the Lib Dems, will try to reassure voters that his alliance with Prime Minister David Cameron will endure until the next national election.

"I am absolutely committed to this Coalition lasting until 2015 - as is the Prime Minister," Clegg will tell reporters in a speech, excerpts of which were released to the media beforehand.

"To those voices who say that it will be in either, or both, parties' interests to prematurely pull the plug: I couldn't disagree more."

One senior Lib Dem source said Clegg's move was an attempt to "calm the horses" after local media reports quoted unnamed aides in Cameron's Conservative Party as saying they had drawn up contingency plans for a possible coalition breakdown.

"Weeks of turmoil" in the Conservative party had created an impression of instability within the coalition, the same source said, referring to high-profile intra-Conservative rifts on gay marriage and on Britain's European Union membership.

More than 40 percent of Cameron's 303 lawmakers voted against his flagship same sex marriage bill on Tuesday evening, underlining how divided his party is on that and other issues.

Cameron has ruled with the Lib Dems since 2010, but the two have taken increasingly different positions on issues such as Britain's role in Europe and on reform of Britain's unelected upper house of parliament.

On Sunday, Cameron raised the possibility for the first time that the coalition might not last the course, though he said he wanted it to hold together.

"But if that wasn't the case then we'd have to face the new circumstances in whatever way we should," he told Britain's Total Politics magazine.

DISENCHANTMENT

Some analysts believe the Lib Dems might be tempted to leave Cameron ruling alone at the head of a minority government nearer the next election to try to differentiate themselves in voters' minds from the Conservatives.

Many traditional supporters of the Lib Dems, a centre-left party, felt alienated when Clegg struck a coalition deal with the Conservatives, a centre-right party, and have been further disenchanted by what they see as the coalition's "lurch to the right" on immigration and welfare policy.

That disappointment is reflected in opinion polls. Support for the Lib Dems has fallen to less than 10 percent, a rating that means they would be hammered if an election was held today.

Cameron's Conservatives are also in no hurry to test public opinion. They trail the opposition Labour party by up to 10 percentage points in the polls and are under pressure from the increasingly popular anti-EU UK Independence Party.

However, many of Cameron's own lawmakers are growing weary of governing with the Lib Dems.

One of them, David Burrowes, told Reuters: "I think it will hold together but there are clearer and clearer dividing lines. Putting it in marriage terms, it's not irreconcilably broken but we would be pleased to divorce them as soon as possible."

Clegg, whose leadership of his own party, like Cameron's, is under constant pressure, will play down such a prospect.

"In 2010 the British people dealt us this hand. And they will not forgive either party if we call time ahead of the election that has been legislated for in 2015 - destabilising the nation in the vague hope of short-term political gain," he will say.

Monday Morning Cup of Coffee: Investors keep sights on real estate ...

Monday Morning Cup of Coffee is a quick look at the news coming across the HousingWire weekend desk, with more coverage to come on bigger issues.

The investor frenzy in real estate continues with Atlanta-based private equity firm Hibernian Pacific Holdings recently purchasing a portfolio of 45 single-family attached and detached homes in DeKalb County, Ga.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the company?s CEO and President Jason Joseph called it a "strategic step to grow a portfolio of assets in the residential market, because we are going to continue to see this type of asset in the community bank sector."

The Chicago foreclosure epidemic continues with over 36,000 properties listed in some stage of foreclosure, writes the Chicago Tribune.

Not only is this a disaster for the area?s housing market, but it?s created another crisis?namely neighborhoods now riddle with additional criminal activity. The paper notes some area neighborhoods now look like war zones, with empty and damaged bungalows and flats abutting various streets. ?

Reverse mortgages are back in the headlines, but now it seems lenders are debating whether they want to move from a phone-origination model to one where they maintain reverse mortgage branches in the field, reports Reverse Mortgage Daily. Maverick Funding is an example of one such firm that is reportedly hiring more originators to work in the field.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is questioning whether government loan modification programs failed a segment of borrowers who were promised a chance at sustainable relief only to find it's hard to achieve long term.

According to the paper, 1.6 million homeowners have saved their homes through government programs, but others are finding mods through the Home Affordable Modification Program and other initiatives as more temporary and not a cure all.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. reported the closing of Central Arizona Bank in Scottsdale, Ariz., this past week.

All deposit accounts were moved to Western State Bank out of North Dakota. The former Arizona branch will open under the Western State Bank brand. No specifics were provided on the closing's direct impact on the Deposit Insurance Fund.

Japan government upgrades economic assessment for first time in two months

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's government upgraded its assessment of the economy in May for the first time in two months, in a sign growth is accelerating as exports and factory output pick up.

The economy is gradually recovering, according to the government's monthly economic report released on Monday. That was an upgrade from last month, when the government said the economy was showing signs of recovery but still had some weak spots.

Japan's gross domestic product expanded in January-March at its quickest pace in a year, data showed last week, as gains in consumer spending and a rebound in exports helped the economy recover from a slump last year.

The upgrade highlights the success of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's policies, which combine stimulus spending with aggressive monetary easing to pump-prime the economy and are resulting in a sharp weakening of the yen.

"We expect the economy to continue to recover as exports improve and as economic stimulus and monetary policy steps bolster sentiment," the Cabinet Office said in the report.

Abe, who is preparing to lead his Liberal Democratic Party in an upper house election in July, has put in place aggressive monetary easing and heavy fiscal spending with the aim of beating 15 years of nagging deflation.

The policy mix, dubbed "Abenomics", has pushed the yen to a 4 1/2-year low and sparked about a 75 percent rally in Japanese shares since November.

The government said exports are showing signs of recovery, which was in an upgrade from last month as the weak yen pushes up export volumes of cars, steel and chemicals, according to the Cabinet Office. That marked the second consecutive month of upgrades.

The report said factory output is gradually recovering, which was the first upgrade in two months. In April, the Cabinet Office said output was only showing signs of recovery.

Private consumption is recovering and capital expenditure is bottoming out, the Cabinet Office said, which was unchanged from last month's report.

The Bank of Japan stunned global financial markets last month by agreeing to double the amount of government debt it holds over the next two years to end deflation and achieve its 2 percent inflation target.

The overhaul of monetary policy has helped shares rally and pushed down the yen, but it caused yields to rise temporarily, leading the BOJ to boost money market operations to reduce volatility and push yields lower.

Microsoft's next Xbox: The rumor roundup

DNP Microsoft's Next Xbox the rumor roundup

It's been eight years since Microsoft and Sony announced new consoles, and tastes have changed considerably. Back then, new gaming gear was launched at E3, or using Elijah Wood-fronted MTV specials, but this time around Microsoft is pitching a tent on its Redmond campus for the world's media to huddle under. With less than 24 hours before the next Xbox is revealed, it's high time we sifted through the leaks, rumors and prognostications to see what we know, or at least, what we think we know about a little box called "Durango."

Japan's KDDI gets HTC J One with microSD slot

HTC J One

HTC flagship comes to Japan with oft-requested removable storage

HTC and Japanese carrier KDDI have announced the HTC J One -- a new variant of the HTC One designed fro the Japanese market. The J One packs much the same internal hardware as its international cousin, but with the addition of a microSD slot, allowing storage to be expanded by up to 64 gigabytes.

The HTC J One also supports FeliCa NFC-based wireless payments and 1Seg digital terrestrial TV broadcasts. (There's a new opaque area below the camera lens which may be part of the internal hardware for one of these two features.)

HTC's also debuting some new accessories alongside the J One. There's a hard shell cover with kickstand, and the HTC J One Mini -- a version of the HTC Mini handset already released in China, or a "phone for your phone," if you prefer.

This isn't the first localized HTC One we've seen with removable storage. Last month a Chinese variant of the phone appeared with a removable back cover, microSD support and dual-SIM capabilities. It isn't clear whether the J One will incorporate a similar removable back, but as HTC's already manufacturing this kind of device for China, we'd bet that's probably what's going on here.

The HTC J One is due to go on sale in Japan from early June.

New Xbox more than a game console for Microsoft

By Malathi Nayak and Bill Rigby

SAN FRANCISCO/SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp is set to make a splash this week with the eagerly awaited unveiling of its new Xbox game console, eight years after the last version, as it seeks a larger share of the $65 billion a year global computer gaming industry.

But the small device faces some big competition from the PlayStation 4 by Sony Corp and the Wii U by Nintendo Co Ltd in a shifting market.

Gamers are gravitating to online play - suggesting the hey-day of console games are over - while Microsoft wants its sleek new toy to finally cross the bridge to the mainstream and become the family's entertainment center.

"Core gamers are very hungry for a new machine but the difference between 2005 and now is that the stakes are so much higher," said Ryan McCaffrey, executive editor at entertainment website IGN.com, harking back to Microsoft's last Xbox release. "The entire Xbox experiment from Microsoft was for it to be the center piece of your living room."

To that end, industry-watchers are expecting a raft of improvements from the new Xbox, when Microsoft unveils it at its Redmond, Washington, headquarters on Tuesday, from closer integration with the TV and link-ups with mobile devices to access to new and even exclusive content.

Console gaming still takes the lion's share of a growing gaming market - about 42 percent of the $65 billion world market, according to Microsoft. But playing games on smartphones and tablets, or as an offshoot to online social networks, is gaining ground fast.

Console sales have been in decline for the last four years, chiefly because of aging devices, but the first of the new generation of machines has not reignited the sector.

Nintendo's Wii U, launched in November, had sold only 3.45 million units through the end of March, well below the company's initial forecast of 5.5 million. Hopes for Sony's PS4, teased in March, are low key.

"The next wave crest isn't as high as the previous one," said Lewis Ward, research manager at International Data Corp, who calculates that about 250 million Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii units were sold between 2005 and 2012.

"I do think that consoles as a product category have peaked and the next gen devices won't match those totals," he said.

LOW MARGINS

The Xbox itself is not a key financial factor for the world's largest software maker. Its Entertainment & Devices unit is set to break $10 billion in sales for the first time this year, but that's half the sales of its Windows unit, and a lot less profitable, averaging less than 15 percent margin compared to 60 percent or higher for Windows or Office.

The company has more than 46 million members who subscribe to its online gaming and digital entertainment service Xbox Live, but that's still a fraction of the people who pay for its software.

However, the Xbox is still a key weapon in Microsoft's strategic battle with Google Inc, Apple Inc, Amazon.com Inc and others for a central place in consumers' lives.

"This (the new Xbox) is of massive importance to Microsoft. It is a piece of a larger war for the consumer that it is battling. They want to be fully integrated with the consumer whether it's in the living room or mobile," said P.J. McNealy, CEO and founder of Digital World Research. "Arguably the battle against both Apple and Google for dominating a consumer's time share more so than taking on Sony and Nintendo directly."

That means Microsoft will be aiming for many markets at the same time, from the core and casual gamer to the TV watcher and music fan.

To do that, industry watchers expect Microsoft to integrate the new Xbox much more closely to the TV and cable or satellite box, perhaps allowing users to change channel or buy movies with a wave of the hand through its motion-control Kinect sensor. They also expect to hear more about SmartGlass, Microsoft's app that lets you link an Xbox to a tablet or smartphone.

Users can already get Netflix through the Xbox, and Microsoft recently started its own studio to produce exclusive content, meaning the new device is a gateway to much more than games.

"I think they're going to try to have their cake and eat it too - they will try to get casual people for entertainment while keeping the hardcore gamers interested," said McCaffrey at IGN.com. "They want their console on all the time, whether it's a mom watching Amazon video, the son playing a game and the dad watching (Major League Baseball) TV on another app - that's their goal."

Mars rover Opportunity examines clay clues in rock

May 18, 2013 ? NASA's senior Mars rover, Opportunity, is driving to a new study area after a dramatic finish to 20 months on "Cape York" with examination of a rock intensely altered by water.

The fractured rock, called "Esperance," provides evidence about a wet ancient environment possibly favorable for life. The mission's principal investigator, Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., said, "Esperance was so important, we committed several weeks to getting this one measurement of it, even though we knew the clock was ticking."

The mission's engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., had set this week as a deadline for starting a drive toward "Solander Point," where the team plans to keep Opportunity working during its next Martian winter.

"What's so special about Esperance is that there was enough water not only for reactions that produced clay minerals, but also enough to flush out ions set loose by those reactions, so that Opportunity can clearly see the alteration," said Scott McLennan of the State University of New York, Stony Brook, a long-term planner for Opportunity's science team.

This rock's composition is unlike any other Opportunity has investigated during nine years on Mars -- higher in aluminum and silica, lower in calcium and iron.

The next destination, Solander Point, and the area Opportunity is leaving, Cape York, both are segments of the rim of Endeavour Crater, which spans 14 miles (22 kilometers) across. The planned driving route to Solander Point is about 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers). Cape York has been Opportunity's home since the rover arrived at the western edge of Endeavour in mid-2011 after a two-year trek from a smaller crater.

"Based on our current solar-array dust models, we intend to reach an area of 15 degrees northerly tilt before Opportunity's sixth Martian winter," said JPL's Scott Lever, mission manager. "Solander Point gives us that tilt and may allow us to move around quite a bit for winter science observations."

Northerly tilt increases output from the rover's solar panels during southern-hemisphere winter. Daily sunshine for Opportunity will reach winter minimum in February 2014. The rover needs to be on a favorable slope well before then.

The first drive away from Esperance covered 81.7 feet (24.9 meters) on May 14. Three days earlier, Opportunity finished exposing a patch of the rock's interior with the rock abrasion tool. The team used a camera and spectrometer on the robotic arm to examine Esperance.

The team identified Esperance while exploring a portion of Cape York where the Compact Reconnaissance Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter had detected a clay mineral. Clays typically form in wet environments that are not harshly acidic. For years, Opportunity had been finding evidence for ancient wet environments that were very acidic. The CRISM findings prompted the rover team to investigate the area where clay had been detected from orbit. There, they found an outcrop called "Whitewater Lake," containing a small amount of clay from alteration by exposure to water.

"There appears to have been extensive, but weak, alteration of Whitewater Lake, but intense alteration of Esperance along fractures that provided conduits for fluid flow," Squyres said. "Water that moved through fractures during this rock's history would have provided more favorable conditions for biology than any other wet environment recorded in rocks Opportunity has seen."

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Project launched Opportunity to Mars on July 7, 2003, about a month after its twin rover, Spirit. Both were sent for three-month prime missions to study the history of wet environments on ancient Mars and continued working in extended missions. Spirit ceased operations in 2010.

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover Project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? The ousted head of the Internal Revenue Service apologized to Congress on Friday for his agency's tougher treatment of tea party and other conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. He said they resulted from a misguided effort to handle a flood of applications, not political bias.

"I want to apologize on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service for the mistakes that we made and the poor service we provided," Steven Miller, who has been acting IRS commissioner, told the House Ways and Means Committee as the panel held Congress' first hearing on the episode. "The affected organizations and the American public deserve better. Partisanship and even the perception of partisanship have no place at the Internal Revenue Service."

At a hearing that saw lawmakers from both parties harshly criticize his agency, Miller conceded that "foolish mistakes were made" by IRS officials trying to handle a flood of groups seeking tax-exempt status. He said the process that resulted in conservatives being targeted, "while intolerable, was a mistake and not an act of partisanship."

Though Miller and another top IRS official are stepping down, the chairman of the committee said that would not be enough.

"The reality is this is not a personnel problem. This is a problem of the IRS being too large, too powerful, too intrusive and too abusive of honest, hardworking taxpayers," said Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich.

At one point, anti-IRS sentiment was voiced by spectators, who included members of grass-roots conservative groups. They broke into cheers after Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., said, "This is absolutely an overreach, and this is an outrage for all Americans."

Camp also said the tougher examinations that conservative groups encountered seemed to be part of a "culture of cover-ups and intimidation in this administration." He offered no other examples.

Camp's remark about cover-ups drew a sharp retort from the committee's top Democrat, Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan. Levin said if the hearing became a preview of the 2014 political campaigns, "we'll be making a very, very serious mistake."

The administration has been forced on the defensive about last September's terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans, and the government's seizure of The Associated Press' telephone records as part of a leaks investigation.

Republicans are hoping to link the issues in an effort to raise questions about President Barack Obama's credibility and make it harder for him to press a second-term agenda.

Friday's hearing is the first of what are expected to be many on the subject by congressional panels. Underscoring the seriousness of the episode, Miller was sworn in as a witness, an unusual step for the Ways and Means panel and one that could put Miller in jeopardy if he is later shown to have misled lawmakers with his testimony.

When the hearing ended after nearly four hours, Camp said, "I promise the American people, this investigation has just begun."

Levin said that the IRS's mistreatment of conservative groups meant the agency "completely failed the American people." He said Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS division that makes decisions about tax-exempt groups, should be "relieved of her duties."

Miller said the IRS struggled to efficiently handle growing numbers of applications for tax-exempt status.

The agency has said between 2008 and 2012, the number of groups applying for tax-exempt status as so-called social welfare groups more than doubled. Along with that was an increase in complaints that such groups were largely engaging in electoral politics, which is not supposed to be their primary activity.

"I do not believe partisanship motivated the people" at the IRS who engaged in the harsher screening for conservative groups, Miller said.

In recent months, Republicans on the Ways and Means panel had repeatedly asked the IRS about complaints from conservative groups that their applications were being treated unfairly.

On Friday, numerous Republicans wanted to know why Miller and others never told them the groups were being targeted, even after May 2012, when the IRS has said Miller was briefed on the practice. Miller was previously a deputy commissioner whose portfolio included the unit that made decisions about tax-exempt status.

"I did not mislead Congress or the American people," Miller told Rep. Charles Boustany Jr., R-La., one of several Republicans who challenged him about why he hadn't mentioned the targeting in the past.

Also testifying Friday was J. Russell George, the Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration.

In a report he issued this week, George said IRS officials reported they were not politically pressured to target conservative groups. Asked about that conclusion, George said Friday, "We have no evidence at this time to contradict that assertion," but in prepared testimony to the committee he said he is continuing to investigate that question.

George's report concluded that the IRS office in Cincinnati, which screened applications for the tax exemptions, improperly singled out tea party and other conservative groups for tougher treatment. The report says the practice began in March 2010 and lasted more than 18 months.

The report blamed "ineffective management" for letting IRS officials craft "inappropriate criteria" to review applications from tea party and other conservative groups, based on their names or political views. It found that the IRS took no action on many of the conservative groups' applications for tax-exempt status for long periods of time, hindering their fundraising for the 2010 and 2012 elections.

Republicans have spent the past few days trying to link the IRS' improper scrutiny of conservatives to Obama. The president has said he didn't know about the targeting until last Friday, when Lerner acknowledged at a legal conference that conservative groups had been singled out.

Many of the groups were applying for tax-exempt status as social welfare organizations, which are allowed to participate in campaign activity if that is not their primary activity. The IRS judges whether that imprecise standard is met.

Attorney General Eric Holder has said the FBI was investigating whether the IRS may have violated applicants' civil rights.

Obama has rejected the idea of naming a special prosecutor to investigate the episode, saying the investigations by Congress and the Justice Department were sufficient.

Obama has named Daniel Werfel, a top White House budget officer, to replace Miller.

Also Thursday, Joseph Grant, one of Miller's top deputies, announced plans to retire June 3, according to an internal IRS memo. Grant is commissioner of the agency's tax exempt and government entities division, which includes the agents that targeted tea party groups for additional scrutiny.

Grant joined the IRS in 2005 and took over as acting commissioner of the tax exempt and government entities division in December 2010. He was just named the permanent commissioner May 8.

When asked whether Grant was pressured to leave, IRS spokeswoman Michelle Eldridge said Grant had more than 31 years of federal service and it was his personal decision to leave.

Cleveland boosts efforts to find other missing people

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? The county that includes Cleveland said Thursday it will strengthen efforts to locate missing people following the discovery of three women who said they were held captive in a home there for about a decade.

Cuyahoga County is launching a website about unresolved cases and plans to hire three people to focus on them, county Executive Ed FitzGerald said.

The announcement came 10 days after 911 calls led police to a home where they found Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight a few miles from where they separately disappeared between 2002 and 2004. Neighbors and relatives have said they were shocked by allegations that the women were taken and held captive by the homeowner, Ariel Castro, who is charged with kidnapping and rape and is expected to plead not guilty.

FitzGerald said the discovery prompted officials to expedite previously determined plans to focus more resources on such cases. The new initiative will address a gap in information-sharing for police, the public and families of the missing, he said.

The county sheriff's department will add two deputies dedicated to missing-person cases and hire a liaison to update the new website, help local law enforcement exchange case information and ensure cases don't fall through the cracks.

"One of the things we've seen in this is a case is kind of a hot case for a while, and then it kind of goes cold after a while," FitzGerald said. "It's important, I think, to have a couple law enforcement officers that are specifically assigned to these cases no matter how hot or cold they may be."

The city of Cleveland has about 110 unresolved cases, or roughly one-tenth of the state total, and it's hard to determine how many people are missing throughout the county because it hasn't had a central location for that information, FitzGerald said. The website under construction is intended to fill that void and will allow the public to look up case information, report tips, get advice on what to do if someone disappears and print posters about those who are missing.

FitzGerald estimated the cost of the initiative, including the dedicated staff, will be about $250,000 annually.

Sheriff Frank Bova emphasized the initiative applies throughout the county, not just in Cleveland.

"As the last few weeks has taught us, the search for a missing person should be a never-ending mission for families, law enforcement and our community partners," Bova said.

An attorney representing the three women found May 6 didn't immediately return a call seeking their reaction to the announcement.

In recent years, the city's police have overhauled how they handle missing-person and sex crime investigations based on recommendations issued after the remains of 11 women were found in 2009 at the home of Anthony Sowell, who is now appealing his death sentence in the women's killings.

Many of the women were missing for weeks or months, and some had criminal records. Some of their relatives believed police didn't take the disappearances seriously and complained about the handling of the missing-person reports.

In the wake of that case, police created a missing-persons unit and a related website, trained officers in best practices for those investigations and broadened the domestic-violence division of the city prosecutor's office to include sex crimes.

Morehouse College To Graduate Father And Son Duo This Weekend

When Dorian Joyner Jr.?s dad told him that he would soon be joining him at Morehouse College, the freshman thought it meant that his father would be coming for a visit.

In actuality, his father meant that he would soon be joining him as a student at the Atlanta campus, he told WXIA-TV.

The younger Joyner and his father, Dorian Joyner Sr., will both be graduating from Morehouse College this Sunday after spending three years together on campus. President Barack Obama will be speaking at the ceremony.

While the elder Joyner initially attended the school from 1984 through 1988, he dropped out early to build his career, according to a profile on the Morehouse website. Years later, after his oldest son had began attending Morehouse, he decided he wanted to re-enroll and complete his degree.

While his son was initially shocked by his dad?s decision, he said he liked having him around on campus.

"We used to have a support system. Sometimes he would come to my room to ask about a problem or a class or a professor to take," the younger Joyner told WXIA-TV.

In fact, the younger Joyner, an English major, said being on campus with his father, a religion major who plans to attend law school, was actually ?natural."

?We rarely see each other, because we have class and we have our own lifestyles. He have a job; I have a job; he have a social life, and I have a social life,? he said in a Morehouse video. ?But when we on campus, we see each other as students and also as father and son.?

The duo isn't the only family to graduate together.

Earlier this month, father and mother Jeff and Christina Crise, and son and daughter Josh and Amada Crise, all graduated from Des Moines Area Community College, according to local Iowa outlet KCCI News.

Obama planning June 3 mental health conference

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is planning a mental health conference next month in response to gun violence.

Presidential spokesman Jay Carney said Obama and Vice President Joe Biden plan to host the conference June 3 at the White House. Carney said attendees will include mental health advocates, health care providers, faith leaders, government officials, educators and people who have experienced mental health problems.

Carney said they will discuss how to reduce the stigma for those struggling with mental health problems so they will reach out for help.

Carney noted that the vast majority of those with mental health conditions are not violent and are more likely to be victims than perpetrators of crimes.
