Growing Up Geek: Nicole Lee

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, a feature where we take a look back at our youth, and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. This week, we have our very own Nicole Lee!

Growing Up Geek Nicole Lee

My fondest memories of growing up in Malaysia don't consist of balmy weekends by the beach or the bounty of fresh mangosteens in my grandmother's kitchen. Instead, my childhood is a blur of video games, Saturday morning cartoons, Apple Macintosh Classics, IBM PC clones, and frequent trips to the local library where my parents would leave me alone for hours. Out of sheer boredom, I read every book I could get my hands on, and a lifelong love of reading was born. Parental neglect or ingenious education tactic? You decide.

Exercise Programs May Not Be Effective for Fighting Childhood ...

Health experts have been looking for solutions to the childhood obesity crisis. A number of health professionals have developed exercise programs that they encourage parents and schools to incorporate into children?s daily lives. However, a new report from Britain has shown that these programs may not be effective at helping children maintain a healthy weight.

The study was led by?Brad Metcalf, a statistician who heads the department of endocrinology and metabolism at Peninsula College. Metcalf and his peers were surprised by the findings of the study. Exercise programs don?t help children become active enough to reduce their body mass indexes. Metcalf said that health experts will need to find a solution that actually works as they search for a solution to the childhood obesity crisis.

Childhood Obesity Epidemic

Metcalf studied more than 14,000 children from around the world. Previous researchers relied on formal interviews to gauge children?s level of physical activity. Metcalf said those studies were not very reliable. His team focused their study on children who wore motion sensors, which he felt would yield more accurate data.

A number of experts challenged Metcalf?s view. They have stated that the study doesn?t necessarily prove that physical activity is ineffective at reducing body mass indexes. They argue that policy makers will need to look for new solutions and perhaps analyze existing exercise programs. Rather than dismissing physical activity as ineffective, they may need to take new measures to make physical activity a societal norm.

According to?David Katz of Yale University, many of these programs are used as a last resort for obese children. Children may be encouraged to participate in an exercise programs, but aren?t given the resources or support needed to change their lives in other ways. Children may be encouraged to exercise more during the sessions the program takes place, but revert to a?sedentary?lifestyle throughout the rest of the week.?Katz said that lawmakers will need to help develop the proper cultural environment that encourages children to be more physically active in their daily lives, as well as eating healthily.

A number of critics have also disputed the accuracy of Metcalf?s findings. He analyzed more than 30 reports from other researchers throughout the world. Some of his colleagues point out that the problem with these metadata studies is that a couple of flawed studies can bias the data of the larger study.

Mark Hamer is one of Metcalf?s peers who wrote a similar piece in another medical journal. Hamer said that Metcalf?s study did have some flaws. However, he believes that it is the most accurate study that has been conducted to date.

The medical community has been skeptical of Metcalf?s findings, but feel researching this phenomenon is extremely important. They are likely to conduct other studies in the future.

Russia bans controversial anti-Islam video

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian court paved the way for a potential closure of the video-sharing website YouTube by banning an anti-Islam video on Monday that sparked violent protests across the Muslim world.

Moscow's Tverskoy Court ruled that the crude video, which was made in the United States and portrays the Prophet Mohammad as a fool and a womanizer, was "extremist".

Prosecutor Viktoria Maslova told the court that the video "puts the Islamic religion in a bad light and aids the rise of religious intolerance in the Russian Federation", the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Under legislation that goes into effect on November 1, Internet sites carrying content banned in Russia will be placed on a register, after which Internet providers will have one day to block access.

Google Inc, the owner of YouTube, said it was ready to block access of the film to users in Russia once it received the court's decision, the RIA agency reported. No one at Google was available for comment to Reuters.

Google has blocked the 13-minute video in a number of Muslim countries including Egypt and Libya where U.S. diplomatic premises have been attacked by protesters.

Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov, one of the opponents of the new law, said last month that the video could be used as a pretext to close down YouTube.

Religious sentiment has become a subject of debate since an anti-Kremlin demonstration by the punk band Pussy Riot in Moscow's main cathedral angered the politically powerful Russian Orthodox Church.

Three band members received two-year jail sentences for 'hooliganism based on religious hatred'. They said they were in fact being punished for publicly criticising President Vladimir Putin.

Authorities in Russia, home to 20 million Muslims, have been quick to seize on the Muslim reaction to the online video to point to the dangers of hurting religious sensitivities.

A court in the North Caucasus region of Chechnya, where Russia is fighting an insurgency against Islamist separatists, decided last week to ban the video as extremist, local media reported.
