Gary Marshall: Apple's iPhone: fantastic at five

I decided to buy my one in a car park. It was late at night, I was a sleep deprived new dad, and I was trying and failing to find a late-night pharmacy using my BlackBerry's web browser.

I invented all kinds of new and exciting swear words that night, and when I came home I ordered an iPhone and threw the BlackBerry in the bin.

I'm ordering another one today: my wife's contract is up, so she's going from a 3GS to a 4S. My wife can't be arsed with technology, but if I told her I was swapping her 3GS for anything other than a new iPhone - a BlackBerry, say, or a Lumia, or even a Galaxy S3 - I guarantee I'd end up in roughly the same shape as RIM or Nokia: in pieces, on fire, in a wheelie bin.

We're on our fifth iPhone now. The world, according to Strategy Analytics, is on its quarter billionth.

Not bad for a phone Steve Ballmer said nobody would buy.

Boom!

It's hard to exaggerate the iPhone's impact. It's damn near destroyed RIM and Nokia, forced Microsoft to come up with a decent mobile OS, made mobile internet - proper mobile internet, not some crappy facsimile - commonplace, paved the way for today's booming tablet market, given Flash a bloody nose, made Angry Birds an icon and introduced the app economy.

Is the iPhone 4S the best phone in the world today? My friends here at TechRadar towers say no, but if it weren't for the iPhone they'd be raving about some kind of Orange SPV, not a pocket rocket with a slick touchscreen and a world of apps.

If you're an Android fan, you can thank Apple for saving you from an Android that looked awfully like a BlackBerry. If you're a Microsoft fan, you can thank Apple for finally persuading Microsoft to boil Windows Mobile down for glue. And if you're a BlackBerry fan... well, sorry about that.

Tech journalists like me are paid to be the Waldorf and Statler of technology, the grumpy old men in the Muppet Theatre's balcony pouring scorn on everything they see, but even at my most jaded and cynical I can't help being excited about where we are now.

Just look at today's trending topics and the stuff in the sidebar: Nexus tablets, Microsoft Surface, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, third generation Samsung Galaxies and the first of what could be many Intel-powered mobiles... we've seen more fascinating tech this month than most people expect to see in years.

The tech industry is going through a magical period, an explosion of creativity the likes of which we haven't seen for a very long time. The iPhone isn't responsible for all of it, but it certainly lit the fuse.

Yitzhak Shamir, hawkish Israeli premier, dies

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Yitzhak Shamir, the hawkish Israeli leader who balked at the vision promoted by the United States of trading occupied land for peace with the Palestinians, died on Saturday after a long illness. He was 96.

The second longest-serving prime minister after Israel's founder David Ben-Gurion, Shamir clung to the status quo. Admirers saw strength and resolve in his position, while critics called him an intransigent naysayer who allowed Arabs to cast Israel as obstructing the road to peace.

"Yitzhak Shamir belonged to the generation of giants that founded the State of Israel and fought for the freedom of the Jewish people in its own land," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement after his death.

Shamir professed a commitment to peace, calling it "the only prize ... that can justify any war," but insisted Israel never be rushed into a deal or lose its nerve.

"Big countries, I told myself, can afford to make mistakes; small ones cannot," he wrote in his memoir "Summing Up".

Born in Poland with the surname Yezernitzky, Shamir moved to British-ruled Palestine before the Holocaust, in which his family died. Steely and secretive, he ran missions against British and Arab targets for the hardline Jewish underground group Irgun, taking his Hebrew name from an alias used to evade police dragnets.

Captured and deported to Eritrea in 1946, the diminutive, beetle-browed Shamir missed much of the fighting that led to Israel's founding two years later. Upon his return, he found himself out of step with the country's left-leaning political leadership of the day.

The Mossad spy service provided Shamir a back door to power. Recruited in 1955, Shamir clambered up the Mossad's ranks during shadow wars with Middle East foes and international hunts for Nazi fugitives.

He credited a posting in France with lending some refinement to his style - "the scenery, the way people looked, the food, the wine, Piaf," he would later say - and prepared him for his 1980 breakthrough as foreign minister for the rightist Likud party.

Shamir was a distrustful diplomat. Prime Minister Menachem Begin had signed a landmark peace accord with Egypt in 1979, yet Shamir bristled at Cairo's insistence that Israel make way for Palestinian independence.

"Judea and Samaria are an integral part of the land of Israel, neither 'captured' ... nor 'returnable' to anyone," he said, using biblical terms for the occupied West Bank.

Ruined by Israel's 1982 Lebanon invasion, Begin resigned and was succeeded by Shamir, who would later enter an awkward coalition with Shimon Peres' left-wing Labour party in which the two leaders rotated the premiership between them.

It was a time of turbulence in Israeli politics and life. Shamir was forced to crack down on challenges from a new Jewish underground made up of West Bank settlers, who attacked Arab notables and a Jerusalem mosque, and from the first Intifada, or Palestinian uprising, which erupted in 1987.

Rather than seek accommodation with the Palestinians, Shamir championed new settlements and the immigration of hundreds of thousands of Soviet and Ethiopian Jews in a bid to maintain Israel's Jewish demographic identity.

Although known as a hardliner, Shamir nonetheless showed teeth-gritting restraint during the 1991 Gulf War. At the urging of the United States, he held Israel's fire in the face of Scud missile salvoes by dictator Saddam Hussein rather than retaliate and endanger the U.S. alliance with Arab powers battling to expel Iraq from Kuwait.

His forbearance on that occasion drove home Israel's subordination to Washington's Middle East interests.

"I can think of nothing that went more against my grain as a Jew and a Zionist, nothing more opposed to the ideology on which my life has been based, than the decision I took ... to ask the people of Israel to accept the burden of restraint," Shamir said later.

After the war, U.S. President George H.W. Bush called on Israel to accept multi-party peace talks with the Arabs. His administration drove home the demand by postponing $10 billion in U.S. loan guarantees that the Shamir government needed to absorb new immigrants.

Shamir hinted darkly that Bush, leader of the country's most important ally, was an anti-Semite but relented on attending the Madrid peace conference, where he became the first Israeli leader to sit opposite Palestinian, Syrian, Jordanian and Lebanese delegates.

The event was short on reconciliation -- Shamir spoke of peace with only "self-government" for the Palestinians -- but paved the way for the bilateral negotiations pursued by Labour's Yitzhak Rabin, who rode a wave of Israeli optimism to defeat Shamir in a 1992 election.

Shamir was infirm and withdrawn from public life in later years. With Likud back in power and his former deputy foreign minister Netanyahu as premier, Israel remains at loggerheads with the Palestinians, with many disputes still festering.

"The truth is that, in the final analysis, the search for peace has always been a matter of who would tire of the struggle first, and blink," he wrote in his autobiography.

New Book Addresses the Skin Side Effects of Cancer and its - AB2W

Skin, hair, and nail effects often go untreated and may cause delays in cancer therapy

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 28, 2012

New therapies for cancer have increased the number of survivors but often result in side effects that affect the skin, hair, and nails. These side effects may cause discomfort, pain, and distress, and may be significant enough to interrupt life-saving treatment. Mario E. Lacouture, MD, an Associate Attending Dermatologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a leading authority on dermatologic conditions that result from anticancer medications, has written the first book for patients that directly addresses the skin, hair, and nail changes that patients experience during cancer and its treatment: Dr. Lacouture?s Skin Care Guide for People Living With Cancer.

Dr. Lacouture?s Skin Care Guide for People Living With Cancer, published by Harborside Press, LLC, includes information about the rash, itching, or dry skin that may come with cancer treatment; tips for caring for the nails; the risks for hair loss; how to stay safe in the sun; and even cosmetics that are right for patients. The book offers clear information and practical suggestions for preventing, treating, and living through these skin, hair, and nail changes.

?For obvious reasons, the skin, hair, and nails have not been the topmost concerns in oncology?the most important goal is to treat and cure the cancer,? said Dr. Lacouture. ?But skin side effects can affect patients? sense of self and their interactions with others. These side effects can lead to costly treatments, affect overall health, and perhaps most significantly, they may require that anticancer treatments be reduced or stopped altogether.?

The skin, hair, and nails are constantly renewing and changing, making them susceptible to chemotherapy, biologic therapy, or radiation therapy, which often attack fast-growing cells. Common side effects from these treatments include itching, dry skin, nail changes, and hair loss. One of the most common side effects from modern therapies?a rash?is actually an indicator that the treatment is working against the cancer.

?What many patients do not realize,? said Dr. Lacouture, ?is that most dermatologic side effects are manageable, allowing people to maintain their quality of life and continue their cancer treatments.?

?This is an area of dermatology that is still evolving, and many physicians are new to the scientific literature in

Austin Mayor, city staff plan trip to London for F1 Race

AUSTIN -- The City of Austin is a little more than five months away from the Circuit of the Americas (COTA)?Formula 1?race -- the largest,?worldwide event to come to Austin.

"We're going to be on an international stage here, and so we have to familiarize ourselves and do everything we can to try to determine what we need to do to prepare this community," said?Deputy City Manager?Michael McDonald.?

McDonald said about?four weeks ago COTA?offered to send Mayor Lee Leffingwell and City Manager Marc Ott to a similar event -- the F1?race in London. They accepted. The City also wanted to send four staff members,?including Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo and Austin Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr. COTA?agreed to?pay for those additional four rooms, and the City had to buy the plane tickets. Those four tickets are going to cost $5,400. The money will come from the travel section of the City budget.

City officials say it's a small investment to ensure the race, which will bring an estimated $4 billion economic impact to Austin over the next 10 years, will be successful.

"When the comment was made that there would be no money spent on F1, that was a point in time where we were talking about the support that the City would have to give in order to be spent by the state. We never anticipated not doing the things that we would normally do as a city for any special event,"?said?Assistant City Manager Sue?Edwards.

Edwards said that?includes?visiting events to prepare. The problem is, City Council Member Laura Morrison says some council members, including herself,?didn't know about the trip. She found out?from a constituent.

Morrison voted against hosting F1 and?says the council was ensured that no taxpayer dollars would be spent on the event.

"Any dollar that we spend on F1 is a dollar we don't spend on something else,"?said Morrison.

"Promising not to spend city tax dollars and then turning around and spending city tax dollars looks bad," said?former Travis County Judge Bill Aleshire.?

Aleshire said?he understands that circumstances?about events change,?but?thinks the City needed more transparency. He's also concerned about a potential conflict of interest, claiming the mayor and city manager are accepting a gift, the trip,?from a company looking for tax breaks and incentives.

The City says?there is no conflict.

"We checked with our law department, and they did not find a conflict of interest. All of the decisions that the city council has to make about COTA?and F1 have been made," said Edwards.

COTA also?offered the Travis County Commissioners a similar opportunity to go to the London?race. The commissioners were split on the vote,?saying they didn't have enough time to decide. Still, Judge Sam Biscoe pointed out that the court supported the idea of going to a race to have a better idea of what they would be dealing with in November. He?even called it a "missed opportunity" for the county.

Austin city officials leave for London on?Thursday July 5, and will?return on Sunday July 9. City officials say this is strictly a working trip, with meetings?and tour planned throughout their stay.

Restaurant Review: Nippon Sushi | Ottawa Citizen Style

Octopus balls in Barrhaven? Say it isn?t so!

In Japan, they have been serving these grilled snacks called takoyaki ? tako, meaning octopus, yaki meaning fried or grilled ? at specialized food stands for almost 80 years. An analogy, and no doubt a straining one, might be a savoury Timbit, but with morsels of sea creature in the middle, drizzled with mayo and a Worcestershire-style sauce.

I did my takoyaki homework ? even consulted a friend in Japan who swears that she makes them at home and they can be quite tasty ? after having an appetizer serving at Nippon Sushi, a three-month-old restaurant of about 20 or so seats in a Greenbank Road mall.

Alas, I?m not a takoyaki convert because of the Barrhaven rendition, with its too-chewy octopus. But the restaurant is doing some things right, while flunking on other accounts, and it gets a check mark simply for serving some less common Japanese items in addition to more standard fare and ostentatious, deluxe, North American-style maki rolls.

We get our hopes up simply because the restaurant makes a good first impression in terms of look and service. It?s starkly minimalist and tidy, with a blond wall, matching tables and decorated booths on one side, facing an oversized mural of a Japanese parasol and an ersatz cherry tree blossoming by the cash. The sound system pipes koto music throughout our two dinners.

Service is friendly and attentive, and the kitchen each time sends some complimentary rolls as a hospitable gesture.

Of its appetizers, we try the aforementioned takoyaki ($7 for four). Better is the okonomiyaki (okonomi meaning ?what you want?), a larger savoury pancake with more flavour and more seafood (i.e., squid) content, similarly topped with squiggles of mayo and savoury sauce, surrounded by bonito flakes. For $12, it?s expensive, but not objectionable. The $4 bowl of steamed edamame (soy beans) was just fine, as were bowls of miso soup ($2).

More problematic was the menu?s ?bento? offering ($15) which came in a small, stylized pail rather than the usual compartmentalized box. Its assortment of items ? tempura shrimp, salad, rice, gyoza ? were haphazardly presented, the shrimp, which was rolled in panko and fried rather than cooked in a proper tempura batter, was short of flavour, and the dumpling was distressingly under-cooked. On a second visit, the gyoza were properly cooked, but their fillings tasted too much of vegetable and too little of pork.

Better, with its satisfying broth, was the tempura udon ($12), one of two noodle soup dishes. However, the tempura component was ho-hum, all-vegetarian and shrimp-less.

The restaurant serves nine deluxe rolls, heavy on sauce, crunch and bonus ingredients. Of the three we sampled, best was the Fantasy Roll ($12) with barbecued eel rolled tight with seaweed and cucumber, topped with avocado and fish roe. The mysteriously named B.S.C., (California roll with spicy baked scallop ? maybe that should be S.B.C.?), $12, was overly gooey but interesting, and the Spider Roll ($13) disappointed because it skimped on the soft-shell crab.

Simpler sushi, salmon and tuna nigiri were fine ? even preferable to the strongly sauced creations, which cumulatively could strike as too much of a creamy thing.

Red bean ice cream satisfied to end the meal, deep-fried green tea ice cream not so much. If the restaurant seeks and gets a liquor licence, some sake would take the edge off.

The Impolitic: Rand Paul mucks up flood insurance bill

This is why the Senate can't get anything done. The Tea Party Republicans are professional asshats. Even when they have an important bill on the floor that actually has bi-partisan support, some grandstanding idiot GOPer like Rand Paul holds flood insurance hostage to pander to his zygote worshipping cult.
WASHINGTON -- Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) moved this week to hold a noncontroversial flood insurance bill hostage until the Senate agrees that life begins at fertilization.

The bill, which would financially boost the National Flood Insurance Program on the cusp of hurricane season, had been expected to pass easily in the Senate. But since Paul on Monday offered an unrelated "fetal personhood" amendment, which would give legal protections to fetuses from the moment of fertilization, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is threatening to halt progress on the legislation.

"I'm told last night that one of our Republican senators wants to offer an amendment -- listen to this one -- wants to offer an amendment on when life begins," Reid said on the Senate floor Tuesday. "I am not going to put up with that on flood insurance. I can be condemned by outside sources; my friends can say, 'Let them have a vote on it.' There will not be a vote on that on flood insurance. We'll either do flood insurance with the amendments that deal with flood insurance, or we won't do it. We'll have an extension."

I've long thought the amendment procress is in serious need of an overhaul. It would eliminate a lot of time wasted on horsetrading and increase transparency of the process if they never allowed unrelated amendments to be brought forward. It should be a rule, not an exception to the norm.

Good for Harry for finally drawing a line. Hope he holds to it. The media circus around that showdown would reinforce the GOP War on Women narrative and piss off every homeowner in a flood zone. It's a win for Dems. Sadly, knowing Harry, I expect he'll crumble like a coffeecake at the first mean word in the national media.

In Utah, a softer touch on a still-tough immigration law

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - Utah insists that on immigration issues, it is no Arizona. Its laws are kinder and gentler, officials say. Despite its conservatism, Utah is one of only three states, for instance, where illegal immigrants can drive.

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Monday that upheld a key part off Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigrants will set the pace for Utah and other states where laws have been on hold pending the high court decision.

Passed in 2011, a year after Arizona's law, Utah's bill requires law enforcement to check the immigration status of anyone detained for a felony or serious misdemeanor. Unlike neighboring Arizona, Utah makes checks discretionary for those suspected of lesser offenses.

"I went out of my way to tame down (Utah's law), to really specifically go after criminals and not the soccer mom," said state Representative Stephen Sandstrom, chief architect of Utah's law.

Unlike Arizona, Utah passed provisions outlining a guest worker program and allowing illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition. But those aspects did not take effect, and experts say implementation is unlikely.

Human rights activists see little difference in the policies of the two states.

"There is this idea that Utah is more pro-immigrant than other states," said Esperanza Granados, an attorney for the Utah American Civil Liberties Union.

"The truth is that it (the law) has the same impact on the community. There is a risk of racial profiling. People are afraid. They don't know what's going to happen," she said.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday upheld the Arizona law's most controversial aspect, requiring police officers to check the immigration status of people they stop.

But in a split decision, the justices also ruled that three other challenged provisions went too far in intruding on federal law, including one making it a crime for illegal immigrants to work and another requiring them to carry their documents.

"We believe this is a win for Utah," Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said at a news conference after the high court ruling was announced. "It really confirms that the Utah legislature did something different."

The ruling by the highest court in the United States goes to the heart of a fierce debate over the 11.5 million illegal immigrants the government estimates to be in the country.

President Barack Obama has vowed to push for comprehensive immigration legislation if re-elected on November 6. Polls show Hispanics, now 16 percent of all Americans, overwhelmingly support Obama. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney opposed the administration's challenge to the Arizona law.

'UTAH NEVER USED TO BE LIKE THIS'

One plaintiff in a Utah lawsuit filed by the ACLU and others is 36-year-old Alicia Cervantes, who was born in Utah but whose partner is an illegal immigrant. The couple avoids activities as camping and fishing, fearing being targeted for their ethnicity.

"We try to avoid certain places because they have random checkpoints, or we know of the officers targeting Latinos," she said. "Utah never used to be like this."

The Utah law lets authorities query the immigration status of passengers in a vehicle whose driver has been detained, and requires proof of citizenship for many public services.

A federal judge has stayed the main law, HB 497, pending the Supreme Court decision on Arizona's law.

"Whatever happens to the Arizona law is basically going to tell the tale for the Utah law," said Gabriel Chin, an immigration law professor at the University of California-Davis.

Of the four provisions in Arizona's immigration law that were before the Supreme Court, two are mirrored in Utah law: The one requiring immigration checks for those detained by police, and another allowing police to arrest immigrants without a warrant if suspected of a crime that makes them deportable.

But there are differences. "The Arizona law was designed to make it a crime for an undocumented person to be in the state," Chin said. "The Utah law doesn't go that far."

Over time, Sandstrom, the Utah law architect, has shifted his immigration stance. After a revelatory experience a year ago, he now supports paths for illegal immigrants to become citizens.

A 19-year-old woman named Sarah came up to him after a public meeting and shared her story: She was three when her parents brought her from Mexico. She was an honors student, planning on working to save money for college, when her parents told her she was in the country illegally.

"This girl, she is trapped. And we've got hundreds of thousands of kids in her situation that are trapped in this no man's land," Sandstrom said.

He still backs his enforcement bill, but wishes he had worked with the Hispanic community to make clear that it was part of a package of laws. Sandstrom ran for Congress this year, but was ousted during Utah's Republican convention after losing the conservative vote over his new immigration stance, he said.

Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants brought into the United States as children will be able to avoid deportation for at least two years and get work permits under a June 15 order issued by Obama.

Get most out of Cellphone for Business |

We are living in an age and time when telephone communication has become indispensible for successfully running a business ? be it of any size or scale of operations. The mobile phone particularly has become commonplace for millions of people across the world. People now consider the ability to communicate through mobile phone as ordinary. The biggest advantage of mobile phones is obviously accessibility 24?7. An incoming caller (particularly customers) will not feel annoyed listening to replies like ?Mr. Smith is not available? jaw crusher. As a business owner, you can contact your field staff and travelling employees at all times. Likewise, employees can also communicate with you and refer critical problems any timewithout having to be in the office. Thus, if your key personnel are given mobile phones, then they become more easily accessible.

Effective use of mobile phones can help improve employer to employee, employee to employee and more importantly, customer to business communications cone crusher. Mobile phones are now ubiquitously used that many customers expect your employees to have one. Instead of feeling frustrated when told that a particular person is not there to answer a call, many customers will now straightaway ask for his/her mobile number. A mobile phone, being an individual-owned device, gives you more time to communicate with a customer and you can also hold an important conversation from anywhere.

When traveling on business purposes on a working day, then normally you would lose many hours of communication but with a mobile phone, it need not be so. A mobile phone allows you to confirm and check details quickly with your office, even at times when you are sitting in front of a prospective customer. A mobile phone means you can also check with your office while away from and need not worry about returning to find that a major development is behind schedule.Jaw crusher:http://www.hxjqchina.com/product-list_11.html
ball mill:http://www.hx-crushers.com/

With the rapidly advancing technology, the mobile phones, can act as a complete functional organizer. This is particularly true of mobile phone models aimed at business users. You can set reminders and notes in the same way as you would with a paper organizer. There is no need to wait for viewing email messages as it is now possible to access all your emails via the WAP and GPRS (mobile internet) connections of new model mobile phones. In fact, some mobile network packages even allow notification of send a fax.

A good mobile package means you will be informed about all important communications while you are away and hence your ability to communicate with customers /employees /suppliers/ associates is not hindered. A mobile phone can serve as an effective extension of a land phone. Instead of callers to your land phone then having to try your mobile number, they can be forwarded almost instantly to your mobile phone if you are not available.

One of the major worries about providing employees with mobile phones is that they will misuse them for personal calls and waste office hours and also run up massive bills. But, banning personal use of the phones outright can create a negative attitude towards employees.

Emerging tech harnessed to improve the world

11 hrs.

This is an excerpt from Hybrid Reality, a new e-book by Ayesha and Parag Khanna.

The word ?technology? combines the Greek tekhne and logos, symbolizing that technology, like language, is as intrinsic to the human condition as speech. Language, though, does not stand alone; it is part of a larger cultural system. Hence the German word Technik, which denotes not only technologies themselves, but also the skills and processes surrounding them. A century ago, leading Western philosophers appreciated the promise and peril of mass industrialization technologies. Oswald Spengler?s Der Mensch und die Technik: Beitrag zu einer Philosophie des Lebens (1931) proposed to integrate technology into a philosophy of life, arguing that Technik is a process that unites our economic, political, educational and cultural systems. The American sociologist Lewis Mumford, in his Technics and Civilization (1934), emphasized that technology must be more than just objects seen as ends in themselves (monotechnics); it must be a collection of ideas and methods that improve society (polytechnics). Technik unites the scientific and mechanical dimensions of technology (determinism) with a necessary concern for its effect on humans and society (constructivism). Technik, then, is the technological quotient of civilization.

Whereas geotechnology is about power, Technik is about adaptability. We live and die by our Technik, the capacity to harness emerging technologies to improve our circumstances. How does our culture deal with the distribution of technology? Can we devise strategies to maximize the upside of technology while minimizing the downside? Instead of West vs. East and democracies vs. dictatorships, actors ranging from cities to diasporas to corporations to cloud communities will compete and collaborate to attain Technik.

Science-fiction author William Gibson?s famous quip that the future is already here but unevenly distributed is the quintessential encapsulation of the fact that we differ in our stages of Technik. In a world of such diverse political forms??? ?democracies, monarchies, authoritarian states?? ?the ?war of ideas? will never be won. Instead, we will increasingly differentiate societies on the basis not of their regime type or income, but of their capacity to harness technology. Societies that continuously upgrade their Technik will thrive.

When standards of living are so perpetually threatened by technological shifts, shouldn?t Technik be a factor in evaluating societal stability? The contrast between the U.N.?s Human Development Index (HDI) and the reigning obsession with per capita GDP illustrates just how important it is to develop a more neutral, long-term-focused metric for progress. Many wealthy societies have low human-development scores (e.g., Arab petro-states), while China?s score is rising quickly even as its per capita income remains modest. We should layer on technology-focused criteria as well, such as the World Economic Forum?s Network Readiness Index (NRI), which assesses the quality of individual access, government regulation and business investment along more than 50 indicators. Not surprisingly, Sweden, Singapore and Finland are at the top, but interestingly, technocratic China scores higher than democratic India, and India higher than Italy. Good Technik requires a combination of the attributes that deliver high human development, economic growth, political inclusiveness and technology preparedness.

Which societies display the best Technik today? Given the high proportion of Asian leadership with science, engineering and math backgrounds, and their countries? export-led growth creating sizable surpluses, it is no surprise that first Japan, and then Korea and China, have invested so heavily in infrastructure to catch up with?? and potentially surpass????the West.

Japan?s technology obsession and idiosyncratic social traits make it a fascinating case study of the early Hybrid Age. Japan already has 38 of the top 50 cities ranked by speed of Internet connection. Its resilience as a society is demonstrated by its ability to rebound from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, keeping supply chains intact and rebuilding coastal communities. More broadly, Japanese society has embraced robots to such an extent that it seems to prefer a man-machine hybrid civilization to an ethnically mixed one. Robots are increasingly employed in building homes, caring for the elderly and even entertaining the masses???witness Hatsune Miku?s sold-out holographic concerts.

But there are costs to such a rapid embrace of robots: Males unable to meet traditional expectations become alienated and retreat into Internet addiction and virtual companionship, accelerating a decline in the birthrate. If any country becomes the first to feature human and robot citizens fruitfully co-creating a new hybrid culture, it is likely to be Japan?? but it needs to make sure there are enough humans there to enjoy it.

Singapore, once a colonial swamp governed from India, is today a seamlessly efficient cosmopolitan world capital of finance and, increasingly, innovation. Indeed, the lack of natural resources has made it an innovator in the most (un)expected areas, from fuel refining to water desalination. Now its Biopolis and Fusionopolis complexes aim to capture the edge in life sciences and immersive media. Peter Schwartz likes to call Singapore ?the best-run company in the world,? and indeed it is the leading role model in city-state Technik for entities from Abu Dhabi to Moscow to Kuala Lumpur. It must, however, evolve its political and educational systems to ensure that its own people are innovating in addition to all the talent it imports.

Finland, the so-called ?open-source nation,? is a leading Western example of Technik. Finland?s sophisticated population has embraced the digital life and pioneered mobile technology (Nokia) and an open-source operating system (Linux). In Helsinki, mobile phones are as much for banking and street navigation as for communication. In no other country does one so strongly feel that a mobile phone is part of one?s identity. It cannot be the weather that has earned the country the second position worldwide in the United Nations World Happiness Report.

Israel presents another example of rising Technik. Not only has it made major investments in biotechnology and other strategic sectors, but for several years its chief scientist gave out nonrecourse loans to more than 4,000 startups. Rwanda, Mongolia and many other nations are seeking to copy Israel?s blueprint as the ?startup nation.? Technology will long outlast the United States as Israel?s key ally.

Even a country still as overwhelmingly poor as India can elevate its Technik. Its mobile-phone penetration rate is skyrocketing, a biometric national identity card scheme is gradually delivering rights and services to hundreds of millions of previously disenfranchised citizens, digital kiosks in dusty villages are spreading access to information and education, and a sophisticated Right to Information Act requires publishing all laws on the Internet. Parts of India such as its tech hub, Bangalore, represent the leap from an agricultural to a service economy in a single generation.

The United States is home to some of the key pioneers of Technik, whose innovations help society adapt to the future?? yet it struggles to keep first-mover advantage over their innovations. Semiautonomous government agencies such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have invented technologies?? from the World Wide Web to robotic exoskeletons????that eventually gained widespread application. However, the U.S. share of global R&D, like global GDP, has fallen to around 20 percent, and since not enough of those funds are devoted to commercialization initiatives, the United States sometimes has to buy things it invented a decade ago from competitors abroad. Fortunately for America, it is still home to most of the world?s ?silicon superpowers?: IBM, Google, Cisco, Apple, Microsoft and more. Those companies? hardware and software platforms are the foundation for almost endless innovation by diverse users worldwide, a contribution no Europeans or Asians can match. Technik is big business: Led by American ingenuity, we are entering the age of the $1 trillion corporation?? ?and the first to cross the mark probably won?t be one of the usual suspects but a manufacturer of 3-D printers that allow anyone to turn virtual designs into physical objects.

IBM is perhaps the leading example of how firms themselves should perpetually seek to upgrade their Technik. Having spun off its hardware production divisions over the past decade, IBM now invests in artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, clean energy and devices for high-tech health care. As a globally integrated enterprise with almost 500,000 employees worldwide (including 100,000 in India alone), it is also a de facto leader in spreading Technik to other societies. For its part, Apple exhibits the clever trait of creativity with control, bringing large swaths of humanity into its exclusive orbit of products and interfaces. Its $100 billion in cash outstrips the GDP of more than 100 individual countries. Apple products are undeniably one of America?s most coveted exports.

Even companies in traditional sectors can demonstrate enormous staying power and Technik by diversifying businesses, exploring new markets and hedging risk. For example, super-major oil companies such as BP and Chevron are among the leading investors in clean energy, and Coca-Cola and McDonald?s own a growing share of the health food sector. Large players constantly ?spin in? dynamic newcomers, incorporating their innovations and modifying their business models to stay on top.

The struggle to attain Technik could become the new global class struggle: those whose wages and quality of life benefit from technology versus those perpetually lagging behind prevailing standards. In the new global class struggle, there would be no clear geographic boundaries such as North and South, since the disparities of Technik exist?? ?and could widen????both across and within nations and cities. Technik is therefore a quality we must all strive for: whether as individuals, companies, communities, cities or countries.

Poll: One-quarter uncommitted in White House race

WASHINGTON (AP) ? They shrug at President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. They're in no hurry to decide which one to support in the White House race. And they'll have a big say in determining who wins the White House.

One-quarter of U.S. voters are persuadable, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll, and both Obama and Romney will spend the next four months trying to convince these fickle, hard-to-reach individuals that only he has what it takes to fix an ailing nation.

It's a delicate task. These voters also hate pandering.

"I don't believe in nothing they say," says Carol Barber of Ashland, Ky., among the 27 percent of the electorate that hasn't determined whom to back or that doesn't have a strong preference about a candidate.

Like many uncommitted voters, the 66-year-old Barber isn't really paying attention to politics these days. She's largely focused on her husband, who just had a liver transplant, and the fact that she had to refinance her home to pay much of his health bill. "I just can't concentrate on it now," she says before adding, "If there were somebody running who knows what it's like to struggle, that would be different."

John Robinson, a 49-year-old general contractor from Santa Cruz, Calif., is paying a bit more attention, but is just as turned off by both candidates.

"I'm just bitter about everybody. They just keep talking and wavering," said Robinson, a conservative who backed the GOP nominee in 2008, Arizona Sen. John McCain, but is undecided between Obama and Romney. "There's nothing I can really say that's appealing about either one of them."

To be sure, many of the 1-in-4 voters who today say they are uncommitted will settle on a candidate by Election Day, Nov. 6.

Until then, Obama and Romney will spend huge amounts of time and money trying to win their votes, especially in the most competitive states that tend to swing between Republicans and Democrats each presidential election. Obama and Romney face the same hurdle, winning over wavering voters without alienating core supporters they need to canvass neighborhoods and staff telephone banks this fall to help make sure their backers actually vote.

"It presents an interesting challenge to the campaigns," said Steve McMahon, a founding partner in Purple Strategies, a bipartisan crisis management firm. "Moving to the middle means winning these voters, but it also means creating problems with your base."

Obama has sought to straddle both the left and the middle by announcing policies that expand access to contraception and allow immigrants brought illegally to the United States as children to be exempted from deportation and granted work permits if they applied.

Both issues are popular with his core supporters and centrist voters. The president also is promoting a list of what he says are bipartisan measures that would help homeowners, veterans, teachers and police officers, and he accuses Republicans of causing gridlock by refusing to act on them. It's a pitch intended for independent-minded voters frustrated by inaction in Washington.

Romney has broadened his tea party-infused message from the GOP primary and softened his tone as he looks to attract voters from across the political spectrum.

He abandoned the harsh immigration rhetoric on Thursday when he pledged to address illegal immigration "in a civil but resolute manner" while outlining plans to overhaul the green card system for immigrants with families and end immigration caps for their spouses and minor children. In doing so, he risked inflaming conservatives who make up the base of the Republican Party.

Overall, the poll found that among registered voters, 47 percent say they will vote for the president and 44 percent for Romney, a difference that is not statistically significant.

Those totals include soft support, though, meaning people who lean toward a candidate as well as those who said they could change their minds before November. The poll showed that these persuadable voters are equally apt to lean toward Obama, Romney, or neither, with about one-third of them in each camp.

The survey also showed that these voters are more likely than others to say they distrust both Romney and Obama on the major issues. They are far more likely to think the outcome of the election won't make a big difference on the economy, unemployment, the federal budget deficit or health care.

Party politics and wedge issues have dubious weight with this group. The poll found more independents fall into this category than partisans. The partisans who are persuadable are more likely to be in the ideological middle than either liberal Democrats or conservative Republicans. Seventeen percent of persuadables say they consider themselves supporters of the tea party.

The poll also found that demographically, they are more likely to be members of Generation X (between the ages of 30 and 49) than other registered voters. Many, 71 percent, have not graduated college. They are a bit more likely to have lower incomes than all registered voters. Fifty-two percent of persuadables have incomes below $50,000, compared with 44 percent of all voters.

On other characteristics ? gender, religious preference and race ? they're split similarly to other registered voters.

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted June 14-18, 2012 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,007 adults nationwide, including 878 registered voters and 228 persuadable voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points. For registered voters it is 4.2 points and for persuadable voters it's plus or minus 8.3 points.
